A fire destroyed almost the whole city in January 1904. The city was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style with the important help of the German Emperor Wilhelm II who made it his holiday resort.

Un incendie détruisit quasiment toute la ville en janvier 1904. La ville fut reconstruite dans le style Art nouveau avec l'aide importante de l'empereur d'Allemagne Guillaume II qui en avait fait son lieu de villégiature.
