Let's get going

Let's get going. Who wants to help organize POTY-2011?? --99of9 (talk) 00:08, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Me! I'll help do Spanish translations too. --ZooFari 01:48, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Hmm Spanish is done. --ZooFari 01:53, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
I guess the 2010 Spanish was done, but for now Template:2011POTY could use Spanish (maybe mostly copied from Template:2010POTY/es). --99of9 (talk) 02:11, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Done German. A brave soul might copy all the 2010 translations and use a bit of research to find "Fifth" and "Sixth" in each language and replace. That would leave just the new "Updates" parameter to translate. Rd232 (talk) 08:20, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Russian is done. --Kaganer (talk) 12:30, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Voting rules

I would suggest to change them. Only count edits on Commons not globally. This would ease verification (e.g. by script). -- RE rillke questions? 11:46, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Why would it make that much difference, at least for SUL accounts? Anyway, I don't think we want less participation from less active users; POTY is an opportunity to engage users who don't visit Commons so often (if anything, we should try harder to invite POTY voting from other projects). Rd232 (talk) 16:11, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Both reasons are included in your reply: There are still some users without SUL and they visit Commons: Click a button and go. To gain good contributors, it needs a concept for "customer retention". But if we invest our time in manually checking eligibility, we could also allow users with e.g. 1 quality image on Commons, ... -- RE rillke questions? 17:14, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
"There are still some users without SUL" - well then they can be a special case (script can identify them and request manual verification). I think perhaps "if it ain't broke don't fix it" applies to changing the voting rules. Rd232 (talk) 00:41, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
I think the situation is more that "it is broke, so let's fix it". I did some vote checking last time, and I recall from the few spot checks I did on other people's checks that the trickier cases (e.g. non-SUL users without user page cross-links) were not always handled consistently. We shouldn't assume that "manual verification" will get it right when the rules are this complex. --Avenue (talk) 09:50, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
OK - if manual verification is a problem that's much more of an argument for doing something. Given the existence of this tool and this tool, I'm not at all sure that changing the rules is the "something"; maybe better guidance is enough. Rd232 (talk) 13:50, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
The tools provided do not output in JSONP, only work with SUL and do not allow specifying a time span. There is also pathoschild's tool but it works only with SUL and does not output JSONP. -- RE rillke questions? 14:47, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
The first one is not just SUL, I think. The other issues don't matter enormously for manual verification. Rd232 (talk) 02:05, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
  • The system I talked about below would include functionality to check the global eligibility, which I think is the best way to encourage participation. This is a sticking point, so before we build anything let's try to determine what we want and how we'll deal with problems. theMONO 03:44, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Infrastructure

There are two ways for the polling-pages:

  • One page per user: User lists his/her preferred images.
    • Advantage: User can easily mange his/her votes (as long as we allow it with abuse-filter); only one eligibility check per page; script can easily display whether the user voted for a picture (last year's script scanned the last 500 contribs but there are problems e.g. when the user revoked a vote). Sample: [[Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/uservotes/<username>]]
  • One page per picture (like last year)
    • The only advantage, I can see are for statistical purposes and maybe less pages.

-- RE rillke questions? 15:17, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Another advantage of the one-page-per-user approach is that it would be easier to check whether someone voted for more than one image in the final round (and perhaps easier to explain that they shouldn't). We had problems with multiple votes last year. --Avenue (talk) 22:18, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
I wonder if mw:Extension:SecurePoll is an option? Commons has it installed, but it's not clear how to set up a vote, or how flexible it is. User:Siebrand has contributed to it, we could ask him - or else someone involved with its use in en.wp Arbcom elections. Rd232 (talk) 02:03, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
(About SecurePoll) Some of POTY2009 committee members considered if mw:Extension:SecurePoll was available (though gave it up in the end). SecurePoll is not suitable for a poll with so many candidates like POTY Round 1. It may be useful in the Final (round 2) with 30 or 40 candidates, though I hear SecurePoll doesn't support images (we would have to vote by number or filename), and you can't see who voted which candidate. --miya (talk) 14:36, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

    • I think I understand now what is being tried here: to hide the running results and replace them with a graph. However changing the criteria in the middle of the contest doesn't seem a very sound principle. Also, showing the running results of all polls is a long tradition in all wikis, which we should keep imo. Alvesgaspar (talk) 14:29, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
I don't try to hide anything. The graph even shows more information than the pure vote list: It shows the votes for one file compared to the average vote per file. Hovering the graph, you get exact numbers (how many votes more for the file) than the average votes per file. Nevertheless, if your browser does not support drawing graphs, simply Please purge your browser’s cache. (You only need to do it once.)

  • Yes, the new system hides the vote list and the total number of votes per file. What I suggest is that both things are kept. That would be easy: just include the graph at the end of the vote list. Alvesgaspar (talk) 15:03, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

header page "look"

hi, i like the new look on the mainpage for this, but 2 suggestions:

1. you don't need to preceed the contest year with a number (i.e.: "1 2010"); it's visually confusing & unnecessary. the numbering scheme also seems to be backwards? in that either the 2007 contest should be "#1", or i am deeply unclear as to what is the point of the numbers? o__0

2. it would be nice if the photos were captioned to indicated "1st place, 2nd place" (& add at least 3rd place?). granted that it is reasonably intuitive to assume that the 1st place image would be to the left of the 2nd place image, but it doesn't hurt to be clear & explicit about this; our mission is to educate, & ppl new to the contest might not necessary "get it" without captioning...

i would make the changes myself, & might have a go in a day or so, if i get no response here, but since i'm not active in running the contest, i thought it would be more polite to mention it first. :)

cheers & good luck with the operation!

Lx 121 (talk) 02:55, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Simply make the required changes but keep in mind that captions need translation. So you should offer a way for easy translation. Thank you. -- RE rillke questions? 08:18, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

update added 3rds, any opinions on:

i. including 4th place?

ii. re-sizing?

also got the rankings into "alt-text", but haven't found a permanently visible captioning format that i like yet; open to suggestions/other editors

& added links for each year's poty to their year-numbers

finally, i do NOT know how to get rid of the ordinal section-numbering; there must be a command for that, & i shall keep looking, but if anybody knows how, please demonstrate?

my wiki-editing focus has not been on making html boxes... >__<

Lx 121 (talk) 23:12, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

I don't have ordinal section numbering. You mean something like 1.2010, 2.2009, ..., right? I guess you set auto-number headings in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. -- RE rillke questions? 09:28, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
>__<!! ok thanks, that saves me much time on a futile effort. xD i've added poty2006 so now it's got all 5 previous year's "top 3 winners". does anyone know how to do captions under (or above) each image? or maybe add the "prize badges"? i've got "1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place" in the alt text, but i can't find a way to make permanent captions (within the "boxes") that will consistently appear in the same position relative to each picture... Lx 121 (talk) 21:59, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Added some "prize badges" but can imagine that one can feel distracted by them. -- RE rillke questions? 06:37, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
looks fine to me :) but what i had meant was to possibly add mini-versions of the poty badges (1st, 2nd, 3rd) under/over/near the images. in any case we should probably come to an agreement about "standardizing" the style for all images. i have no strong feelings pro/con about adding labels like the example 3 to the rest of images, & i can copy the code, but i don't want to do them all, only to have it reversed... Lx 121 (talk) 08:33, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

haha; well i like the little "badge" but it doesn't differentiate 1,2,3 does it? otherwise, the caption underneath seems tidy. if you can show me an example of how to place the code into the "box" (on-page) i'll copy it & do them all later today (need sleep) Lx 121 (talk) 09:12, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Dear nice people helping make this fantastic event possible, I have discovered a (literally) minor problem: some of the images seem to appear in a minimal size, much smaller than what they should and could be, about half the size of the other images, (at least) when setting the Thumbnail size to 750px. This problem appears on (at least) Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/Galleries/Birds. The problem is very easy to circumveint - by simply clicking the image, I am correctly directed to the image page of that picture - but a bit inconvinient, since it makes it impossible to correctly and justly judge all the images in a large size at the same time without having to open new tabs. The images on the Birds gallery that are smaller than they should be are File:Atlantic Puffin Fratercula arctica.jpg, File:Aquila chrysaetos (Linnaeus 1758).jpg, File:Aquila nipalensis orientalis qtl1.jpg, File:Calidris ruficollis - Marion Bay.jpg and File:Egretta novaehollandiae in flight - Gould's Lagoon.jpg. I would like to thank you for the great work being done for this fantastic competition, and of course, it would be even great-er if this problem could be solved. :-) Kindest regards, Calandrella (talk) 16:42, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Oh, yes, I'm using Firefox 12.0 on a Windows XP computer. :-) Calandrella (talk) 16:44, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Do you have a different browser to view this category?
If you can reproduce this with a different browser, I would be interested in your activated gadgets, if it's Firefox only, do you have AddOns that could interfere? It's just that I use Firefox 12, too and don't have the issue.
Also, it seems that the images that are listed last in the gallery are affected, in which case File:Sula nebouxii -Santa Cruz, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador-8 (1).jpg would be also smaller.
This may happen if
  1. A script error occurs (but in this case you should get a red box asking you to report it)
  2. The query-response for the new image sizes sent to the server was truncated. This can happen if for example a Firewall blocked some phrases or the query was not assembled correctly (for various reasons).
If we can't find the problem, there are always large versions available (Commons:Picture of the Year/2011/Galleries/Birds/Large) that do not require resizing by script.
Kind regards -- RE rillke questions? (Developer/Assembler of the POTY-App) 17:32, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer! I tried clearing the cache, but it made no difference... Unfortunately, I don't have another browser. However, since the manually Large page works ver well for me, and it seems that this is merely a problem with my computer/browser, I believe it is not necessary to delve further into this issue. :-) Calandrella (talk) 19:01, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

I have the same problem with Camino 1.6.11 on Mac OS 10.3.9 an with these standart large versions. Kersti (talk) 08:58, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Genau das selbe Problem? (Gleiche Bilder betroffen?)
Wird File:Sula nebouxii -Santa Cruz, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador-8 (1).jpg auch falsch angezeigt?
Funktioniert sonst alles (Wählen, ...)?
Sind die Bilder in der Slideshow sichtbar?
Danke. -- RE rillke questions? 09:58, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Ja, genau dieselben Bilder, so weit ih das sehe. Und sonst funktioniert alles. --Kersti (talk) 12:12, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Danke! -- RE rillke questions? 12:36, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Too many values supplied for parameter 'titles': the limit is 50 -- RE rillke questions? 20:23, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

-- RE rillke questions? 21:35, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
