Can someone please create an SVG file for the city flag of Iola, Kansas (adopted 11 March 2024), as seen here? Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:46, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
Snow Lion Fenian, Any evidence that the flag is compliant with Commons' copyright policy? --Designism (talk) 04:24, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since when are city flags copyright protected? It represents the community, and that's why they are per definition in the public domain. If it had been the flag/logo of the municipal or county organisation, it would've resembled a private company logo, and that might have been a different story. But city flags are supposed to be copied and joyfully used to show that you're pride of your own community. The en:United States Flag Code doesn't talk about copyright either, it only prohibits disrespectful (commercial) use. Groetjes, Peter (talk) 22:19, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I looked a bit further into it:
  • The Flags of counties and municipalities in the United States and Flags of counties and municipalities in Kansas with a copyright restriction are (as far as I've seen) flags with the official seal (or derived from it) or corporate style lettering, which points to flags of the governmental organisation, not the community. That confirms the general distinction between private / public domain flags.
  • Iola's City Council of 2024-03-11 (on YouTube, timestamp 13:11) adopted the Clock Tower Flag as their city flag. You can see that their next step is to find out how to proceed further, with things such as licensing/legal details, and that next step will be discussed in the council. In the Council minutes, up to and including the Agenda of Oct 15, 2024, there's no mention of any further step. So I guess it's still in progress.
Is it a good idea to ask the designer of the flag, whether he'd be willing to upload a svg-version if and when possible? He's not only the designer of the flag, but also a council member, so he should be in the best position to know what can be done and choose an appropriate Commons copyright option. If he'd also upload the second option "Land and Water" design, we'd have a great basis for an Iola Flag article. Groetjes, Peter (talk) 07:49, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Groetjes, Peter: Thanks for your comments. And yes, I do actually think that would be a very good idea, now that you mention it. How do you propose we go about it? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 14:58, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Willing to reduce size to the 14ths and improve quality of the image. The stamp part will still be poor quality. But I can't upload so far.--Vollbracht (talk) 19:46, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For the stamp, make a high-quality text logo stamp (rounded rect and stencil font) and then apply filters to roughen the edges and add printing defects. Glrx (talk) 19:58, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a version that uses not-quite-right fonts (Arial Heavy and Stencil, neither on Commons) and textLength (not supported by librsvg). The stamp effect is done with a filter. I cannot convert font to curves on this machine. Glrx (talk) 01:58, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We should abstain from a try. The document is a digitized book. The book is an artwork in images and letters. Your request is nothing less but a new edition. It hence will have a new cover design and a new publisher. If we call it a text book it might be published on wikibooks. (The German main page states wikibooks is for non-fiction educational or specialized books though.) Vollbracht (talk) 20:14, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
@SnowyCinema: The PDF contains 312 images (ranging from small empty pages of about 70KB to large pages of around 3MB, totaling 251MB). The PDF itself is 208MB in size, meaning that some compression has already been applied. I’m not sure how the PDF could be compressed further without reducing the quality of the individual images. I used Ghostscript to compress the PDF (option: 'ebook'), and in my opinion, the text is still sufficiently readable. I uploaded the PDF, now about 80MB in size. Feel free to revert the edit if you're not satisfied. ––Mrmw (talk) 04:48, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mrmw: I appreciate it. It seems that we're having the usual PDF bug now where a PDF shows up as being 0 x 0 on the frontend. This has been ongoing for over a year and I don't know if it's been pushed to the Phabricator. Usually if you purge and null edit it enough times it fixes the issue. But I can't get it to be fixed... Uh, improve what exactly? Kj1595 (talk) 09:14, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Half of the SVG images are raster images. I really hate to say it but I know you want to preserve the authenticity but to be they looked like rasters (e.g. File:Stema e Musarëve.svg) SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 18:25, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
None of the images listed there are raster images. They are in fact vector illustrations which accurately resemble medieval illustrations from the catalogues which they were sourced from. A raster in such case would be a jpeg image converted into svg. These are not converted images but actual layered drawings. Kj1595 (talk) 22:16, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I added the {{TracedSVG}} template at the top of the category, as these are all vector images created with the auto-trace tool. That's what SpinnerLaserz was referring to when he said these look like raster images. These images are better uploaded as .png if they have a transparent background or .jpg if they don't, with the .svg files redrawn manually - basically what the text of the template says. Please don't remove it a second time. ReneeWrites (talk) 06:48, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are wrong. These illustrations are all drawn from scratch. The simplest way to test even for a beginner is by opening each coat of arms in a browser, refreshing that browser and seeing all the layers unfold into the whole. Impossible to see this effect with a raster image. There is of course the more sophisticated way of testing each image by uploading them in a vector editor. Kj1595 (talk) 07:18, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Allow me to give you a different example of the Albania relief map I made last year. If you see the map here it shows the vectorized model and the png source file. Now, if I were to simply convert this png file into svg, it would never produce the result of the actual drawn vector map above. Kj1595 (talk) 07:54, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Glrx: special:history/Category:Coats of arms of Albanian nobility --Mrmw (talk) 13:02, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sigh. I hope the edit war on the category page has stopped with the discussion on the talk page.
I can understand why the category was tagged with {{TracedSVG}}. Even if the SVG are not autotraced, one can claim a vectorization is inadequate due to the size of the SVG. The first file in the category, File:Stema e Abacisë së Ndërfandinës.svg, looks like a photograph and takes 20 MB. The vectorization certainly has a lot of detail. If I look at the image, it shows posterization. I do not see the original image as a good candidate for vector conversion.
Glrx (talk) 16:25, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Having time to rethink this through, the large mb size has always bothered me as it puts a bandwidth load on the article the images appear in. I will reupload them in larger png format and thereafter nominate the existing ones for deletion. Kj1595 (talk) 20:06, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s)
@100Polar:
Validation is often overly strict. The aria-label attribute is harmless, so I would not fix the validation error.
The SVG 1.1 specification did not include data-* and aria-* labels, so they are marked as validation errors. SVG 1.1 files can use a DTD subset to avoid those errors, but WMF rejects file uploads with such subsets for security reasons. Those attributes were added in the SVG 2.0 specification.
Inkscape inserts the aria-label attribute when it converts an SVG text element to curves. Instead of using a font to draw some text, the SVG now draws the text with curves/path elements (aka path text). The aria-label attribute tells us what the text used to be. If I were to remove the aria-label, then I would first turn the g element containing the path text back into a text element.
At some point, putting version="2.0" on the svg element should make these validation errors go away.

Please fix the wreath on this flag. I have provided the most similar one from the ones already existing if making the original one is too difficult. Unfortunately, the ribbon requires manual fixing. [17] [18] [19] [20]Swiãtopôłk (talk) 21:11, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Need new schematic for helicopter article

Hi. The helicopter article in English Wikipedia is missing a decent diagram illustrating a helicopter transmission. It needs a schematic diagram of a typical transmission. A photo of a typical transmission is here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/mechanical_gifs/comments/nnvl1x/hughes_500_helicopter_transmission_uses_only_two/

The schematic can be a simplification of what is in that photo: the schematic diagram needs to show:

a) the three cylindrical shafts (axles) you see in that photo: diagonal shaft at lower-right; horizontal shaft in upper right; and vertical shaft (upper left).

b) Two pairs of bevel gears (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bevel_gear ). Each pair is two gears: one on each shaft. The individual gears are slanted (cone shape). The final pic will have a total of four individual gears, they should be clear in the above photo. An example line pic of a bevel gear pair is at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bevel_gear#/media/File:Beve_gear_schematic.png

The gears in the schematic do not need to be elaborate 3D CAD-CAM renderings: a sketch of a cone shape with several parallel lines indicating the teeth should be fine (as seen in Beve_gear_schematic.png).

The diagram can omit all the other stuff: the ball bearings; the outer transmission housing (case).

Ideally, the diagram would be from an isometric viewpoint (like the photo); but if that is too time-consuming, a simpler "side view" will be fine. Anything is better than what is there now ... nothing  :-)

I guess SVG vector is the best format. I can add textual labels/arrows to the finished product, it is the gears and shafts that I cannot draw. Noleander (talk) 14:38, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Coat of arms of Hải Dương, French Indo-China

edit

Request
I would like to request the vectorisation of the coats of arms of the city of Hải Dương during the French domination period in the history of the Nguyễn Dynasty.
  •   Addendum, The colour scheme of the Hải Dương municipal coat of arms is consistent as other examples are found here (note that some of the images on the shield are also more visible on it there). I have imported all of these images to the Wikimedia Commons, so here are more general duty (revenue tax) stamps of the French Tonkinese city of Hải-Dương to show more details of the 4 (four) images within the heraldic shield:

Several of the elements found in this coat of arms are similar to the coats of arms of other French Tonkinese cities, for example the mural crown 👑 element is consistent with the Hanoian and Haiphongese coats of arms, though the colour scheme is slightly more intricate.

Coat of arms of Nam Định, French Indo-China

Request
I would like to request the vectorisation of the coats of arms of the French Tonkinese city Nam Định during the French domination period of the history of the Nguyễn Dynasty. Unfortunately, I don't have any better images of this coat of arms, it might be better to make it black and white like this, as I don't know the official colour scheme of this municipal coat of arms and I am currently unaware of any internet website or service having it.

Vectorize - I can't tell exactly what the font and typeface are. It is sourced from a photograph so the angle isn't exactly right currently, just so you know. Also the request is just the text, not the background or any colors. (the vectorized text can simply be black). --Sceeegt (talk) 18:34, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
