Malagasy green lynx spider (Peucetia madagascariensis) male
Comment It may not be worth me asking you Mile as you only ever oppose, and never ever support, my images. But do please explain what you mean by "Yellow/green channel" and "uncalibrated colors". I am happy to tweak colour balance but only if I can understand what you think I need to do to make the image better. Photoshop has magenta<>green and yellow<>blue sliders for colour balance. Charlesjsharp (talk) 16:13, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
How about you send me raw and i try to show what i would like. I didnt know i only oppose your shots, are you sure i never add "s" !? I dont count votes. But more or less your type of coloring (edit) is not what i like so much. Nothing personal. --Mile (talk) 17:37, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Something like this. I saw spider on other photos, and this is more normal. Leaf went to yellow, see spider net, they are more white, your colors go to cyan/magenta. See that piece of wood bellow front leg, it goes to red color. --Mile (talk) 17:54, 27 May 2021 (UTC) P.S. I did saw now 1st version, now we see 2nd. You actually spoiled the colors. Your 1st version is much better.[reply]
Thanks for your clarification Mile. I've uploaded a new version which I agree is better. Charlesjsharp (talk) 21:17, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Longsheng Rice Terraces
  •  Comment Just as in many paintings, the "subject" is the entire scene. And it's a good composition, but a complex one that I need to live with longer before passing judgment on it as an FP candidate. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:39, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment I think that for the whole scene to be the subject, there needs to be some kind of story told, some kind of thematic connection. This has several different interesting details, but it doesn't feel like it comes together for me. -- Lambda (talk) 17:21, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Paintings with similar compositions don't require an actual narrative. This composition has a linear arabesque. That's sufficient for a coherent composition. And it does work for me. However, I'm not convinced it's a great composition, for the reason I alluded to in my question below. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:06, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The photomosaic shows the Blue Horse I by Franz Marc 1911.
This is a special photo mosaic that was based on a lot of photos. It was created with a custom program for large datasets using all JPEG images from Commos 2003-2020, which was about 53 million images and a little over 100 TB. The special thing about this mosaic is that although it has only a very coarse resolution of 15 by 20 tiles, the main subject is quite well recognizable.
  • True there is a frame around this file and others, but could you crop the original images, so as to remove the black borders, and then feed your software? Or just fix the few squares manually, using an image software like Photoshop? -- Basile Morin (talk) 23:27, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • F7a8, you created this nomination on 19 May 2021,‎ but forgot to put it here on the FPC list, and the Bot goes by the creation date when closing nominations. I have removed the Bot-closing for now. Perhaps admin A.Savin would be so kind as to reset this nomination, I'm not exactly sure how to do it. You also erased/omitted the gallery for this image. It is in fact a very elaborate collage so it would fall into the 'Non-photographic media/Computer-generated' gallery. I have added it for you and please don't remove that entry on future nominations. --Cart (talk) 10:10, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Submerged buoy with algae at Rågårdsdal, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden.
  • Well, Commons is a repository for all kinds of images, for all kinds of projects and situations. As you might have noticed I often nominate photos that are a bit "outside the box". It's not that I can't do 'normal' photos, I even nominate a few once in a while (like the diamond necklace), but the project needs diversity and that means it's better if some of us do photos of things other than pretty landscapes, flowers and studio shots. Like Daniel said, try to see this on the cover of a CD or LP, that might help you understand. Or like this photo, that actually became the cover art on a book. This is also what Commons is about. --Cart (talk) 20:01, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm not criticising the idea, it can be liked or not, CDs or a book can have an internal meaning within the disc itself to explain the cover, but here I'm judging the subject, and frankly I'd like to see it sharp. A matter of taste, no offence. P.S. I gave the diamond photo a positive vote [1]. --Commonists 20:27, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I know, that's why I used it as an example. But the point was that the rules for FPC actually says that photos should not be judged from a simple "I like/don't like it" standpoint, but on how useful they are for the Wikimedia project. Of course we all fall into that trap sometimes. I'm not writing here to make you "like" this and change your vote, I was trying to answer your "I honestly don't understand what it is" comment and explain. --Cart (talk) 20:50, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Definitely, but my:"I don't know what it is" can also be read :"what's the point?". I honestly don't understand these pictures but of course I welcome other opinions.--Commonists 21:43, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

U.S. Air Force F-35As and French Rafales perform formation flight over France

The Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) is probably one of the coolest parts of the F-35 for the amateur viewer, which is completely blurry in this image. An Italian partisan in Florence, 14 August 1944.
  • Does it really matter if the photo was posed? It's not unusual that historical photos were "recreated" since phone cameras were not yet invented. This man is named, so not a random partisan or a war photo, and should be treated more as a portrait photo of the times. People pose with all kind of stuff in portraits. The Commons:Featured pictures/People/Portrait#Men gallery would be more appropriate. --Cart (talk) 12:01, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Weak support Yes, it's got flaws, but ... I like the story his facial expression tells. On the one hand it is the confidence that comes with victory and approaching peace, a very Italian confidence; on the other it is apprehension about finally having gotten there masking the fear that he might have gotten too used to war, and lost too much of himself (to say nothing of others who fought alongside him (OK, it's Memorial Day here in the US, but I just realized that was a coincidence)) to truly appreciate that desired outcome he has fought so hard for. SHORT DESCRIPTION
  • Don't you need a completely different focus (way outside the normal focus stacking interval and possibly a different lens) to get the droplet images sharp too? For most

droplet images, it's either focus on the flower or on the droplet image, rarely both. --Cart (talk) 11:46, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think similar things are possible in most stacking programs, but to do it you will still need the image material to do so. When stacking a flower, one might not always chose to have the droplet images sharp too. In this case, I think it would draw the attention from the flower bud and to the droplets instead. Also, to get good in-drop images, you need round drops, these are elongated and will naturally distort any image in them. --Cart (talk) 14:09, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the responses. I don't quite understand all the comments. But that's probably just me. I stacked the photos with "Helicon Focus" and edited them in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. It went to me on the broken flower bud. I only noticed that the drops would become so large during the development. In a few drops see some of the environment. Do I need to change something about the photo or should I withdraw the photo? PS. My response is a bit late. I was not online before today.--Famberhorst (talk) 15:46, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Famberhorst, you don't need to do anything. :-) Charles and I are simply discussing photo aesthetics. He wants everything perfectly sharp, including what is seen inside the water drops, while I don't think it would contribute to the photo. To me, it is a beautiful photo as it is. Vegetarian Pizza
  • As we know, classical vegetarian food doesn't exclude milk products. As for vegan food, certainly there's also "vegan cheese" you can use; anyway I cannot imagine pizza with neither cheese nor tomato paste. What is on the picture, looks like some piece of bread topped by a variety of vegetables, yet not like a pizza. Probably OK to go, but not particularly appetizing. IMHO --A.Savin 19:54, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • w:Focaccia is sometimes called "pizza bianca" and doesn't need to have cheese on it at all. I don't think the claim that this isn't really pizza is a good criterion for opposing the photo. • If you look at the top-right of the original, it's clear it would be impossible to straighten it with any more room than that. Only options would be to leave it crooked or crop it more off the top. — Rhododendrites talk18:15, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree. Hence my oppose. It might have been possible to get a pleasant thickness from the original (unfortunately unavailable). Or DIY something with Photoshop, but that's tricky. Currently too weird, in my view -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:45, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment I'd like a discussion of the 3 versions in the history. Is this the best version, is another one better, why or why not? I think the original (or originally uploaded version, anyway) is most vivid, and I like its contrast, but perhaps it's a bit too contrasty (I'm not sure I like the solid black shapes, such as on his beard). The second version is too dark. I think the current version is brighter than optimal and not contrasty enough. It also does appear to me that the 2nd and current versions have a different kind of grain or noise than the 1st version, and that's worth discussion, too. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:57, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree: The first version is not a faithful digital reproduction: huge areas of clipped shadows. #2 seems to be a +/- straight scan of the negative, and while it retains most detail across the tonal range, it is indeed a bit dark. #3 looks like a good compromise to me. --El Grafo (talk) 09:33, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Info Lake Oroville on the morning of Memorial Day 2021. In May 2021, water levels of Lake Oroville dropped to 38% of capacity. The boats are dwarfed by the exposed banks while California is headed into another drought year. – I was actually surprised to see how few photos about the effects of climate change on the American West we have on Wikimedia Commons. No matter whether this nomination is successful or not, let's talk about how to change that. (c/u/n) by --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 04:25, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Not sure this is the right place for such a discussion, especially since FPC isn't exactly cutting edge when it comes to current events, climate or other. You might have better luck suggesting "climate change" as a theme for the Photo challenge, unless they haven't done that already. Or try to start some drive about it. Most of the time, climate change isn't exactly photogenic. Even going through this subject on Flickr, you just get a lot of photos of people at conferences or marches. --Cart (talk) 14:17, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • These are all houseboats rather than normal boats used to getting around the waterways in, so I would assume people use them to live in. It's like a floating mobile home park. • I apologise for using an obscure English expression. I should have explained. 'Says it all' means that the existing FP tells us about the subject. The new FP adds no value, it says nothing new, and is actually misleading unless you know it is stained. If it happens that the new FP is truer to life then the nomination should be delist and replace as the existing FP would be mislaeading. Charlesjsharp (talk) 09:42, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • The staining is used to better show the structure of the plant, and I think it does so excellently in this photo, more clearly than in the photo with natural colors. Staining is a good scientific method and should not be disregarded. Both photos are valuable, in different ways. I think a good solution would be to place this stained photo in the Commons:Featured pictures/Natural phenomena#Organic gallery where we have other weirdly colored scientific photos like this. I have put cross references in the 'Other' slot on both files so they can be compared and for clarification. What do you think of this Charlesjsharp and JukoFF? --Cart (talk) 10:25, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • No problem, we are all many of us are passionate about photos. :-) I have altered the gallery for you. I too think it is better suited for a scientific gallery. --Cart (talk) 11:06, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support -- It would be useful to add the staining agent (iodine?) in the description of this image just to help distinguish it from the other FP natural color. --GRDN711 (talk) 20:04, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • The staining method is already in the description (luminescence). For many organic compounds/plants/minerals/etc. it is often enough to just shine a UV light on them since they contain natural fluorescent agents (duh... CSI). This can sometimes be helped along by the use of some chemical substance, but I don't think iodine is involved. Here a rather precise light at 365 nm has been used (see the file description), so I don't think any chemical has been added. Please compare with other photos of plants under UV-light, the blackthorn is the closest to this. The term for this is still "staining", since it is not looked at under natural light. There is also already cross-references between the two photos explaining what is what, per my comment above if you check the file pages. --Cart (talk) 20:53, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A squirrel on a snowy branch in the city
  • That would give it almost the same tight crop as most FPs of squirrels as well as ruin the 'light and space' of this photo. I think a bit of diversity in animal photo compos is great. If this was our only FP(C) of a squirrel, a crop might be considered, but they are common animals with lots of FPs and photo opportunities, allowing for some creativity. Also a crop makes it harder to identify the pattern in the background as a building. It would look just like some undefined obscure object/fence/grate/whatever and the whole idea with the image would be lost. --Cart (talk) 17:18, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the suggestion, but more or less in line with what cart says, that would put the photo in a different category in which I don't feel like it works as well. — Rhododendrites talk21:02, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Abstain as nominator. Space shuttle Endeavour and its six-member STS-134 crew break through the cloud cover over Florida after launch, as they head toward Earth orbit and rendezvous with the International Space Station. I stumbled upon this photo a few days ago, liked it and thought it might be worth a try here. An early digital photo from 2011, so some technical issues, but I think the 'wow' still holds. The photo was taken through the window of an airplane, so a bit hazy and tinted by the glass. I gave the photo a cleanup in that I tried to "undo" the window glass. Also added some sharpness and noise reduction, plus cropped it. -- Cart (talk) 16:36, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Oppose on technical quality. There is some posterization and noise in the water at the bottom, which should be fixable with reprocessing. However, I see patches of light grey on the rocks in various places (annotated), which is usually a sign that the whites have been overexposed and forcibly pulled back despite there being no detail to recover. -- King of ♥ 03:21, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't known from what it comes from but I'm unable to see the notes. But in all cases if there are issues, they likely comes from my bad habit of "too much (and often poor) processing", because I just checked the raw file, there is not a single area overexposed neither underexposed. •  Weak oppose it looks to me like the contrasts have been pushed a bit too far, and the end result is too harsh imo. Not all of the dynamic range has to be used everywhere all the time; I think it would be more relaxing to look at if the different elements faded together a bit instead of the constant piecewise separation through jumps between bright and darkness. --Trougnouf (talk) 10:49, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SHORT DESCRIPTION
  •  Comment The tripod could be a Soviet copy of the classic Leitz Tischstativ or Kleinstativ #14100 which was produced since the 1950s (?) in a very similar form. Especially the simple and clever mechanism for the legs seems identical. I have been told that this was one of the most stable mini-tripods ever made. --Aristeas (talk) 09:11, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Just for the record: I have found some free photos of the (later form of the) mentioned Leitz or Leica Tischstativ tripod: folded and ready for use. Note the clever folding mechanism. Earlier copies of the Leitz tripod are even more similar to the one visible in your photo of the Zenit 11 camera. --Aristeas (talk) 15:47, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support This camera is a Soviet-era model, as your description suggests? If so, I like the idea of it not being clean for the shot. This camera is telling us that it's a survivor, that it has every much a right to be posed as if for an advertisement as a brand-new cutting-edge Nikon or Canon straight off the assembly line, polished to perfection. Daniel Case (talk) 17:35, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Comment In this case, rings will not help. I shoot with a Canon 60D camera. From a distance of 1-1,5 meters. Later: RAW - TIF (110%-120%), Cropping & reduction to 5-8mp. I shot almost all cameras like this cameras. Camera Fotocor filmed on Nikon D70s, it was difficult, this camera has only 6 Mp. --Knopik-som (talk) 22:00, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Ah, sorry, my question was not clear. I did not want to ask about how you took this (digital) photo, but whether there are extension tunes mounted on the Zenit 11 camera between the camera body and the Helios 44 M lens. But I have found that there is another photo by you which shows the extension tubes, so my question has already been answered. I was just curious. All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 08:54, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • The "bands" are easily identifiable as cellulose fibers. This is low-quality paper so there are bits and pieces of plant (tree) material residue in the paper, the bit with the holes in it. The clumps and lumps are additives to hold the paper together (lignin and glue), make it whiter (chalk and/or starch or titanium dioxide) or some other color plus something for the texture (clay/kaolin). --Cart (talk) 14:32, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment Daniel and Martin, I'm sorry guys, I know you liked the waves, but I've removed the Alternative. Like I said I've had some bad experience with just waves before and this time it got seriously weird. You can look in the file history if you like, everything is preserved there. Personally, I'm just going to move on and clear my head of all the crazy shit that goes on here at FPC. I need a shower. --Cart (talk) 21:46, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose While it’s surely nice, I am not really wowed by this. As for composition, it’s just too straightforward, and a pity that the opposite shore is mostly in shadow. Overall very grainy and poor detail. --Kreuzschnabel 18:47, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Charles, could you please check your signatures when you edit. You have a habit of dropping half of them. I often fix this for you, but it would be nice if you made sure they are complete. Thanks! --Cart (talk) 21:27, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment IMHO the image looks like scanned from a printed (halftone) image and then smoothed to reduce the visibility of the halftone dots. The bright areas in the background show the slight moiré (“Rosettenbildung”) which typically occurs when smoothing a scanned halftone print. In Tolstoy’s face and on his clothes you can also see traces of the halftone dots – they first look like film grain, but IMHO their arrangement is far too regular for film grain, so I guess these are halftone dots. (Sorry if my explanation is unclear – I did not find a dictionary which provides exact English equivalents of the German technical terms I am used to, and Google & Cº do not know these words, too.) --Aristeas (talk) 09:05, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • The German language has a lot of specific words connected to printing that don't exist in other languages. However In this case, I made a guess that this might be called something like 'rosetting' in English and lo and behold: Rosette, this picture is a good explanation for it.. --Cart (talk) 09:25, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, exactly. In the Tolstoy image the Rosettenbildung is not as prominent as in the cited explanation because the halftone dots have been smoothed after scanning, but in the bright parts of the background you can find the same rhombus structure, similar to an unsharp wire netting. Thank you very much, Cart! --Aristeas (talk) 09:37, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • To clarify, "Service" here means that you are invited to examine your photo at full size (100%); that way you can see some of the errors that people are talking about. I've compiled some files for you for clarification. In Lightroom there is a function where any overexposed parts in a photo are shown as red. Take a look at the first photo in the link and you'll see the red that shows up in your photo. As for the stacking errors, they are not the ordinary misaligned parts that show up in stitched photo, instead they are areas that should have been crisp and sharp, but where the program has missed and has used a soft/blurry photo. I have marked some of these areas with blue in the linked file. Hope this makes it easier for you to understand that critique. --Cart (talk) 18:34, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Support A splendid view with great light and beautiful details. The buildings at the left are leaning in a tiny little bit and there are some very small stiching errors (have made image notes for two), the photo would be even better if you could improve that further. But I do not want to spoil your nomination, this is a wonderful photo and IMHO really deserves the star. --Aristeas (talk) 15:35, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • That is not a very nice way to voice your disagreement, insulting a fellow user/photographer, shouting with all caps and everything. How would you feel if someone posted that comment on your nomination? Where opposers have only been respectful and tactful with their opinions. --Cart (talk) 16:33, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have not insulted anyone Cart. And anyway, I think a photo should have the whole subject if it is put in the description. Plus you have to ping it if you want me to read it. I was speaking in a general way, if someone feels offended I'm sorry, it was just disappointment about this photo, not personal criticism or as a photographer. I humbly apologise. I did not mean to be offensive. Greetings.--Commonists 18:44, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ok Commonists, apologies are a good thing. Next time you are disappointed, just take a few deep breaths before you write. Also, consider yourself one of the gang here; we don't always 'ping' those we know are going to be around the page anyway. :-) --Cart (talk) 18:59, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • This photo isn't a documentary photo of the entire span of one bridge; it's a photo showing a view of 3 bridges plus clouds. I don't understand the rigidity that we sometimes see here, that a photo that includes x must always include the a, b, and c parts of x, no matter what. Even ignoring the fact that conservatism is at odds with the previous century+ of avant-garde art, have cityscape painters, even academic ones, traditionally followed rigid rules of this type? We so often see crops cited as a dealbreaker here, whereas painters constantly crop anything and everything from their views. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:02, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment And here I was, thinking the panorama would look more harmonious if it was cropped even more on the left side. See note. So hard to make a photo to please everybody here. --Cart (talk) 16:33, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Seems the image is distorted (skewed), this is most visible on the left hand side where the rectangular buildings look more rhomboid. Another issue are the shadows; these just look weird. There must have been some shadow detail recovery black magic because the Manhattan Birdge, which is quite a bit darker, is lighter in shade than the shadows on the Brooklyn Bridge's light bricks. Another area to spot irregularities is on the right pillar of the BB where there are very deep shadows on the towers, not seen elsewhere, but also the shade below the deck gets progressively lighter going from right to left. -- KennyOMG (talk) 17:12, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • At least the differences in light and shadows is no mystery for anyone who has done a very large structure panorama on a partially cloudy day, like here. You start at one end with one sort of light and while you move the camera for photos, the clouds move as well. When you get to the other end, the light is completely different and the camera has changed the exposure with it. It's a nightmare. You can correct some of this by matching the exposures in most panorama programs, but that will not fix all of it since so much else change with the light too. Clouds are nice in the background, but for panos with more than three frames, be sure to check the sky behind you. I am not surprised that the clouds played around with you, illuminating this and that randomly from shot to shot when taking on such a big project. (My version, trying to fix some of that + the tilt, to give you an idea.) --Cart (talk) 17:52, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • ✓ Done Thanks for helping me out, here. I like your tilt correction & adjustments. Replicated that on the original. --Axel (talk) 02:24, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment The change in light/shadow is due to Manhattan skyline: Each building's shadow is progressing from left to right. There are no sharp edges due to the distance. The rare thing here is the cloud formation. --Axel (talk) 01:21, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm keeping the crop since I like to have the lead room. As for zoom, well, it is shot from a jetty, the water level was rather low and I have a damaged back (I walk with a cane) so I can't bend down low. On the other hand, you get a longer DoF with a bit of distance. I made the photo, ASQ is my real name, not W.carter/Cart (see my other photos). • I think F5.6 instead of F10 would change total DoF from about 7m to 4m, i.e. 1/2 that for the background. You wouldn't see the difference would you? For my 'ready to go' hand-held settings, I preset 1/1000 sec and ISO 800 (or 400 if very sunny) and the camera chooses F number to suit light available. •  Neutral Overall a good view of the building. The technical quality (sharpness, exposure etc.) is not perfect, but good; the perspective has not been corrected completely. The light is OK, but a bit harsh. The photo would be better without the people, but there are only few of them and they do not hide important features. And, yes, when the sculpture is almost centered it would be better if it was centered completely. --Aristeas (talk) 19:24, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment (1) Yes they did, though many people suggested a square crop. (2) So what? You were precipitous in withdrawing the nomination. There's no rule I can't take it over. Oppose and move on. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:51, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

* Support but a square would be better --Martin Falbisoner (talk) 16:07, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ivar, I think the square crop should be uploaded to another file and then made an Alt. You may own the nomination but you don't own the image. COM:OVERWRITE only permits minor crops to fix mistakes or remove something unwanted from the scene. I think JJ Harrison is an experienced enough photographer to judge their own preferred crop at upload. While a wide crop may seem weaker or unnecessary, it can increase the utility of the image for re-users, who are then free to crop any way they like or to add text on the featureless parts of the image. -- Colin (talk) 21:01, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ivar, I'm a bit frustrated there was no response to this. This is an official guideline on Commons, not just my personal opinion, and should be respected. I've reverted the edit to the file per COM:OVERWRITE. I see elsewhere at FPC also, we seem to have got into a bit of a habit of mucking about with other people's photos when making nominations, either without asking, or in conversations off-wiki unknown to other revewers. A free licence allows one to make one's own derivative work or a crop elsewhere. Overwriting is too much like altering an author's own work and then claiming that's what they should have uploaded instead if only they'd had your talent/software/eye. It's a bit rude. Please create another file for the square crop (using the lossless crop facility on Commons) and alt for this nomination: the guideline does not permit further reverts as contested alterations must be done on another file. -- Colin (talk) 07:39, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Alternative

edit

  •  Info Created by JJ Harrison - cropped & uploaded by Ivar
  • Ivar had the good manners to withdraw the extra nom for this photo, but since a lot of the voters expressed a desire for a crop, it's only fair that it is added as an alternative. I'm 'pinging' previous voters so they have a chance to vote on their favorite version:
Charlesjsharp, Famberhorst, Martin Falbisoner, GRDN711, Daniel Case, Michielverbeek, Axel, Lmbuga, Buidhe, Aristeas, IamMM, Agnes Monkelbaan and Ikan Kekek. --Cart (talk) 11:09, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Question Cart, I like each of them for their own reasons, can I add my support for the alternative without striking my support for the other picture? --Axel (talk) 19:36, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Axel: Yes, of course you can. I think some other voters have done that already, and it often happens on nominations with 'Alt'. In the end, the one with the most support votes win. --Cart (talk) 20:15, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Question OK, what's the rule? Do we consider this file to be created by JJ Harrison, by Ivar, or by both? I suppose on the same basis that edits have been done to works by people who were on Commons only during some year's Wiki Loves Monuments or whatever, it's legitimate to edit this work on the basis that Mr. Harrison hasn't been on Commons since December 27. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:56, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment With these two versions of the same photo in two different noms, we might now head towards a situation where both versions can be promoted and that's not allowed according to the rules. One of the photos should be an 'Alternative' to the other on the same nom. Could the nominators Ikan Kekek and Ivar sort this out. Or even better, both of you withdraw both noms and one of you create a new nom with the original and the crop for people to vote on properly. --Cart (talk) 09:33, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, regardless of who started what, when or why, the mess exists now and it needs to be sorted out so the voting can move forward. A new nom might be the easiest way for voters. --Cart (talk) 10:20, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
