Is this a derivative work of the Led Zeppelin IV album? Probably, but is the symbology copyrightable? I'm not sure. Would four ASCII characters be copyrightable? No. Four characters out of a larger character set? Doubtful. Does the sequencing of the characters meet the bounds for originality? I'm not sure. In any case, it's worth a discussion. Thanks go to en:User:Peregrine Fisher for bringing this to my attention, whenever he's not busy advocating the use of non-free images on enwiki we can now find him shooting down any believed free image which could be construed as non-free. According to this (and w:Jimmy Page) that first rune/glyph dates from at least 1557. I don't think any of the symbols are copyrightable anymore (they all date from hundreds if not thousands of years ago). Copyrighting the sequence is also rather doubtful, but I'm not completely sure. This would be more of a trademark, if in fact any or all of the symbols were registered as a trademark anywhere -- I have no idea on that. I don't think there is a copyright issue though. Given the above discussion I see no reason why we should consider there to be an enforceable copyright on this image, especially given that that it's been rerendered from glyphs rather that directly copied from the album cover. No reason to delete. Kelly Martin 01:04, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. It's made with a font, not a copy of the actual picture. And Led Zeppelin probably never copywrited it.

Album covers are not allowed on commons; they are allowed under the U.S. fair use exception to copyright in the english wikipedia and a few others, but not here on commons (which is a separate project). Nevertheless, I don't think there is a copyright issue here, as these symbols were not copyrightable by Led Zeppelin in the first place. Carl Lindberg 03:26, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Keep the image, as well as free status. I think this argument is pretty much solved already. (English wikipedia kenny)

I think this deletion request should be removed. The name of the album is not actually led zeppelin IV, the image in question is simply a text representation or the true name of the album. I don't see how it could possibly be a copyright infringment. (Charlie Coons)
