English: Novorossiya (or Novorossia, or New Russia) was a former territory (1764–1917) to the North of the Black Sea, annexed progressively by the Russian Empire (at the conclusion of the Russo-Turkish wars of 1735–1739 and 1768–1774) from the former Cossack Hetmanate (1649–1764), a semi-autonomous state vassal to the Ottoman Empire, then governed by Russia first as the Novorossia Governorate (1764–1783), and later merged with Little Russia and Crimea into the Chernigov Governorate (which approximately covers present-day's Ukraine).
It then became part (along with the ethnic Ukrainian region to the south of Little Russia) for a few month of the short-lived Russian Republic (1917) during the Russian revolution; on 10 March 1919 it became part of the first souvereign Ukrainian People's Republic (1919–1922), which joined the former USSR on 30 December 1922 to become the former SSR (and then RSR) of Ukraine (1922–1991) (when joining USSR in 1922, a small area to the east of the former Novorossia was detached from Ukraine to become part of the South-Eastern region of the former Russian SFSR), now independant as the Republic of Ukraine.
Since 2014 at the start of war in the present-day Ukrainian region of Donbass, pro-Russian separatists proposed to create the Federal State of New Russia (possibly extended to cover the region of Crimea, still recognized internationally as integrant part of Ukraine, and some other parts in the South-Western of Ukraine bordering the Black Sea, and the eastern region of Moldavia), but this federal state (self-proclaimed on 24 May 2014 to unite the two separatist and self-proclaimed People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk) was not recognized by Ukraine, Moldavia, or Russia (which only annexed Crimea and Sevastopol, in a separate subject of its Federation) and was dissolved on 18 May 2015.
