A communicative ecology is identified-Foth and Hearn-, as a social layer (people and the ways in which they are socially organised), a technological layer (digital platform, devices and connecting media) and a discursive layer (the content of communication). Teixidora.net was conceived as a process of digital transdisciplinary activism. It aims to connect distributed knowledge generated by communities of practice (social layer) with the relationships among participants at events and with the subjects or discussions, thus creating a discursive layer, in which the purpose is to produce collective narratives, follow what happens and weave relationships by sharing knowledge. Its technological layer, based on several applications and devices, appropriates and combines Etherpad (a...

One such system, still in its early days, is match-funding (co-funding between citizens and institutions), which permits public and private organizations to double financial contributions for projects from individual users. This paper focuses on the Goteo.org platform, a pioneer in the international development of this model. The advantages and impact of this method of crowdfunding compared to the traditional method is analyzed using data collected on the behavior in 14 match-funding calls for projects on Goteo.org in the last 5 years. The results show that match-funding campaigns are more likely to be successful, significantly increase average donations and generate new dynamics of institutional cooperation and proximity in the support for initiatives. This paper joins the still scarce studies on strategic planning within research groups, contributing to the field of both team science and organisational management from a social sciences perspective and “strategy-as-practice” paradigm. Through the case study of an action research group, after the experimental co-creation of its long-term strategy involving different participatory design methodologies, we quantitatively analyze how this process influenced communication and group relations, both internally and in relation to its participation in the ecosystem with other stakeholders. Thus, as a result of a detailed content analysis in the different communication channels and tools of the group, we address its impact on the team’s agile project management (APM), adopt...

Mertonian values and Open Science practices aim to improve the conduct and communication of research and are promoted by institutional actors. However, Mertonian values remain mostly idealistic and contextualized in local and disciplinary cultures and Open Science practices rely heavily on third-party resources and technology that are not equally accessible to all parties. Furthermore, although still popular, Mertonian values were developed in a different institutional and political context. In this article, we argue that new normative structures for science need to look beyond nostalgia and consider aspirations and outcomes of Open Science practices. To contribute to such a vision, we explore the intersection of several Open Scienc...

Beneath it all lies a crisis of meaning, of being able to make sense of the world. If we are to overcome this situation, we need robust scientific knowledge of the world and our place within it. However, science is facing a number of serious challenges to meet these needs of society. One reason for this is that science often fails to fulfil the unrealistic expectations it has set itself to meet. Such expectations are generated by an outdated view of knowledge production, which persists among many members of the public and scientists alike. This has led to an ultra-competitive system of academic research, which sacrifices long-term productivity through an excessive obsession with short-term efficiency. Efforts to diversify this system come from a movement called democratic citizen science. Here, we argue that this kind of citizen science can serve as a model for scientific inquiry in general. It requires a...

Its main objectives are, on the one hand, to provide the knowledge base for the design of research projects from a participatory and transformative approach involving society to strengthen its self-management capacities and, on the other hand, to guide its implementation and evaluation including potentially applicable tools in a wide range of disciplines, contexts and case studies.La Guia de Metodologies Participatives aborda els elements bàsics que caracteritzen les metodologies de recerca aplicada, l'eix principal és la participació i l'objectiu fonamental és la transformació social; així mateix, dese...

More specifically—in the context of Environmental Humanities and regarding biocultural diversity—a key challenge is to set effective and engaging ways of rapid knowledge generation for public awareness and policy-making. According to the 2019 United Nations report on biodiversity, the world will lose one million species in the upcoming years. In parallel, it is acknowledged that the degradation of biological diversity also threatens cultural and linguistic diversity, as declared by UNESCO. In an attempt to contribute to knowledge safeguarding this diversity, a hybrid approach combining the tradition of participatory design with DH tools and with the collaboration of a variety of scholars and stakeholders, has resulted in the co-creation of a manifesto on “biodiversity in connection with linguistic and cultural diversity”. We outline the design thinking methodology applied for this experimental case study, and in parallel apply software-aided discourse analysis of the manifesto co-writing process—from a “sprint” collaborative writing format to an online publication, moving from a face-to-face context into digital collaboration channels. Results highlight the importance of facilitation, flexibility and adequate ways of visualization “in progress” (via analogue materials and DH tools) during the co-writing sprint process, as well as the need to set basic co-creation protocols in such transdisciplinary context, considering synchronous and asynchronous collaboration. We discuss the importance of advancing between DH and sustainability-driven experimental co-creation, connecting practices with opportunities to develop collaborative writing and knowledge generation in the margins of academic settings.

Specifically, it describes and analyses the use of dotmocracy (from participatory design) and planning poker (from Agile frameworks) for decision-taking and uncertainty management in the early definition of collaborative research processes. The analysis, based on participant observation and facilitation in nine collaborative research settings, identifies commonalities on how some issues of uncertainty in collaborative knowledge generation contexts can be addressed by both techniques. Results point to the possibility of using dotmocracy and planning poker for articulating decision-making processes among different available options, in order to find consensus in a visual way, and at the same time to make more explicit the degree of agreement and risk perceptions in relation to scientific activities.

From a cultural but also transdisciplinary perspective, there's still a general lack of knowledge about how algorithms surround us and determine everyday life in many areas, invisibly and secretly operating through our progressively digitized contexts. Although algorithms increasingly determine citizen's lives, as well as opportunities for innovation in cities, their usual articulation for progress and efficiency can present great bias, errors and counter effects. Algorithms represent a complex epistemic challenge: operating in close interrelation with data structures they constitute a core aspect of today's culture, while the fast pace of its technological development requires new strategies for research and knowledge transfer to society.

From a digital "humanism-centered" approach there's the opportunity of address...

Interviews with participants were conducted via video conferencing and were based on a list of open-ended questions, separated into key sections around participation and collaboration in personal science. The codebook to analyze the interviews was based on a conceptual framework that takes into account previous studies on motivations in citizen science, the inquiry cycle of personal science, the scientific values or ethos of the Mertonian norms and collaboration in peer production.
