Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies Ingredients

You’re not going to need any weird ingredients or special tools for these Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies. Still, in case you need to run to the store to pick ingredients up, here’s what you need:

Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies Ingredients
  • Red Velvet Cake Mix – We ended up using this Duncan Hines Red Velvet Cake Mix since it’s one of our favorites. You could just as easily make these Betty Crocker Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies or use any other red velvet cake mix brands.
  • Eggs
  • Butter – Normally, you’d use vegetable oil for cake mix recipes but you can also add in some rich buttery flavor by using melted butter instead!
  • Powdered Sugar – We’ll be using this for getting that powdered sugar coating on our crinkle cookies. You can try using just a powdered sugar coating, but you’ll get a much better coating if you mix your powdered sugar with…
  • Cornstarch – Just a little bit is really going to help that coating stick and stay on our cake mix cookies while they bake.

How to make Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies from Cake Mix

Since these Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies are a cake mix cookie recipe, making them is way too easy! To make yourself a delicious batch of cookies, here’s all you have to do:

  • First, we need to prep our cake mix cookie dough. Start by adding the boxed cake mix, eggs, and melted butter to a large mixing bowl.

  • Use a good mixing spoon to blend and mix those ingredients together until they’re fully incorporated.

  • Over on a shallow bowl or plate, pour out your powdered sugar and cornstarch. Use a whisk to mix them together as evenly as you can.

  • Take your cake mix cookie dough and roll it out into 1″ balls. Give each of these balls a quick roll in the sugar mixture. Evenly coat them before placing on a baking sheet several inches apart. Once they’re all rolled and coated, transfer the baking sheet to an awaiting 375 degree oven. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until set. Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Substitutions

Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies are pretty straight-forward and we’re sure you’ll have most- if not all- the ingredients you need. Just in case you need to make a substitution or two, here’s a few you can try:

  • Red Velvet Cake Mix – We’ve covered this topic before, but you might be wondering “is red velvet cake just chocolate cake?” Real red velvet cake is very different from chocolate cake. When it comes to red velvet cake mix vs chocolate cake mix, they’re pretty much the same. So feel free to make some chocolate cake mix cookies and just add a bit of red food coloring if that’s all you have on hand.
  • Butter – We really like using butter for these cake mix cookie recipes: we think it makes better cookies. Still, you can try using vegetable oil like the cake mix box instructions say. You could also try subbing in some other fats like coconut oil or shortening.
  • Cornstarch – Just in case you’re out of cornstarch or just don’t want to use it, there are other ways to keep your crinkle cookies coated. One of the classic ways is to lightly roll your cookie dough balls in some granulated sugar before giving them that heavier coating of powdered sugar. Note that this is going to add quite a bit of extra sweetness to your cookies and they might be too sweet for some tastes.

Variations

There’s plenty of ways for you to change these Cookies up. For some other Red Velvet Cake Mix Cookie ideas, here’s a couple you can try out:

  • Red Velvet Cookies with Chocolate Chips – This is actually how we used to make Red Velvet Cake Mix Cookies before! Instead of going with the powdered sugar coating, add a healthy amount of white chocolate chips to your cake mix cookie dough. Using white chocolate chips adds a nice flavor contrast to the darker chocolate flavor in the cake. They also bring some color contrast too.
  • Frosted Red Velvet Cookies – Another alternative to the powdered sugar coating is to make some Frosted Red Velvet Cake Mix Cookies. Bake your cookies like normal (without the powdered sugar coating) and let them cool completely. Whip up a quick butter and cream cheese frosting and use it to frost your cookies.

Storage / Freezing

Storage: On the off-chance you don’t eat every single one of these tasty Crinkle Cookies, you’ll want to keep them for later. Whether you storing cake mix cookies in the fridge, on the counter, or in your pantry, you should put them in an airtight container. Keep at room temperature for 3-4 days or refrigerated for up to a week.

Freezing: You can also try keeping these cookies frozen after they’ve cooked. For best results, flash freeze on a baking sheet so they don’t stick together when you transfer them all to a freezer-safe container. Keep frozen for up to 3 months.

Top Tips

Add additional powdered sugar mixture to the tops of your cookies after baking for a bit more color.

    1. Hi Juanita! It can. I have actually done this in the past with a heart shaped cookie cutter. I hope that helps and you decide to make them:)

  2. For the Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies, do I use just the dry cake mix or the cake mix plus all ingredients on the back of cake mix box? These look delicious!
