This research endeavored to describe the concept of nursing in the Philippines from the perspecti... more This research endeavored to describe the concept of nursing in the Philippines from the perspective of Ilocano nurses for the purpose of developing a nursing description which is based on the Filipino nurses’ perception on their nursing practice that will contribute to the richness of the concept of nursing in the Philippines. The descriptive phenomenology of qualitative research was employed. The participants of the study were the 16 practicing nurses in Region I (Ilocos Region) who were identified through purposive sampling based on the set inclusion criteria. The researcher utilized the in- depth semi-structured individual interview to gather the data and used the Collaizi’s method in data analysis. The findings of the study revealed four (4) major themes: 1) Mangtaraken or Caring, 2) Mangpasantak or Nurturing, 3)Mangipateg or Valuing, and 4) Mangsalimetmet or Preserving. This research study aimed to identify the caring role experiences of mother inmates in Ilocos Sur... more This research study aimed to identify the caring role experiences of mother inmates in Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail (ISPJ). The study used a phenomenological design. Purposive sampling was used to choose the 7 participants.The specific techniques utilized were individual interviews, focus group discussions, and narrative data analysis. The unstructured interviews and focus group discussions were guided by the following question: What are your experiences in caring for your children while you are inside the jail? An unstructured individual interview was conducted to explore more data collected from the focus group discussions. The themes that were identified are reminiscing, letting go, communicating, providing, savoring the moment, getting hurt, and powerlessness.The central theme that emerged from the findings is that the mother caring role experiences of inmates is unique. Unlike the impression in the 1800’s about nurses as just merely physician’s assistant, nursing nowadays is linked to caring which requires an investment of self by the nurse – physically, emotionally, mentally and even spiritually.
