He returned to Spain in 1496.
The Maritime History Podcast
Christopher Columbus departed from the Spanish port city of Palos de la Frontera on this day in maritime history, 3 August 1492. Columbus commanded three ships on his first voyage in search of western sea route to China and India: two smaller caravels, the Niña and the Pinta, and a larger carrack from which Columbus captained the voyage, the Santa María. On 12 October Columbus spotted what he thought was China but was really the Caribbean island of Cuba, and the rest of his voyages are history.
