Since Charles V, the kings of Spain had held the position of Grand Master of the Order. The Spanish kings could admit anyone based on their preferences, thanks to Philip II and his reform of the Order in 1577. The Order of the Golden Fleece became a sign of superiority in contrast to their Central European relatives. The Austrian Habsburgs also enjoyed its benefits and rewarded their closest and most faithful servants with membership in the Order. However, they could only support a certain number of their servants and anticipate a positive response from Madrid. The ceremony of the Order of the Golden Fleece, which took place in Prague in 1657, is analyzed in the context of the relationship between the Spanish and Austrian lines of the Habsburg dynasty. Similarly, the ceremony in Prague reflected the situation at the imperial court after the death of Ferdinand III and the transition of power to his son Leopold, connected with a change in the official staff. Thirdly, the ceremony in Prague is compared with a similar ceremony held in Brussels in 1650 to point out potential differences based on the Central European environment.

This matter significantly influenced the relationships between Vienna and Madrid because Austrian siblings represented the Habsburg family's policy. The relationship between Emperor Leopold I and his older sister Mariana of Austria determined for this period not only foreign policy of their monarchies but the Spanish Habsburgs also lost their upper hand against the younger line of the Habsburg family. For Leopold I, his sister represented the most crucial agent in Madrid besides his ambassador. Mariana of Austria became an important source of benefits for the Central European nobility, which traditionally hoped for financial and other support from the Spanish King. Mariana of Austria even influenced one of the most male-dominated spaces in the early modern world, which represented the Order of the Golden Fleece because, as a woman, she could choose the new owners of the Insignia of the Golden Fleece.

The analysis of the Spanish perception (for example, the Spanish ambassador Oñate, members of the State Council, and Spanish King) described the conflict as a broader problem, which could lead to a loss of the Habsburg’s lands in Central Europe. In contrast, the Bohemian point understood the revolt in Prague as a danger to the position of the Catholic nobility in Bohemia.

Named after the book by Christopher Storrs, the long-term paradigm of the decline of the Spanish monarchy in the last half of the seventeenth century has been reestablished, however, the research of the rela- tionships between the Spanish Habsburgs and Central Europe in the last quarter of the seventeenth century has yet to be to be considered. This study presents a more complex perception of the coup led by Juan José of Austria in the year 1677 and discov- ers an important perception of the situation from the point of view of the Emperor Leopold I and the Elector of Brandenburg Frederick William. The new Spanish govern- ment, as well, enacted shifts in their politics which could endanger their positions, however both accepted the new situation differently.
