Annual Animal Blessing

Every year on or about the feast day (October 4) of St. Francis of Assissi, the patron saint of animals, our little church holds an animal blessing. Everyone is invited to bring their pets to church for blessing. In the past there was even a snake who came to church. This year, it was limited to the usual dogs and cats and birds. As there was some logistical problem, this year the blessing was held a week earlier than usual.

I didn't bring any of my cats this year because I was in charge of taking photos.

Those who didn't feel comfortable entering a church, or those whose pets are most likely unable to behave inside the church, we offer blessing in the park, which fortunately is just across the church.

When we were about to go home for the day, a few more people came for the blessing and so the priest conducted the blessing at the parking lot.

  4. I'm sure Father blessed your kitties in absentia -- since you had such a good excuse to leave them at home this year ;>)

  5. This is great and I love seeing all the animals. I have a St. Francis statue in my front yard that was my parents'. Birds land on it all the time but I don't think I've ever managed to get a shot of them on St. Francis.

  13. What wonderful pictures of the people and their pets. You did a fine job of being the photographer for the occasion. Our little Anglican church does the blessing of the animals and it is a special day.
