It should be carried out by people who are well-versed in its principles, methodology and procedures. This paper seeks to identify and study the basic principles and guidelines for the success of Da'wah in the light of the teachings of Sheikh Uthman bn Fodio. It observes that non-professional preachers have caused more harm than good in the society. The paper concluded with recommendations on how to promote effective conduct of Da'wah in Nigeria, particularly taking into consideration lessons from the teachings of Sheikh Uthman bn Fodio.

It is established that the nature of relationship between the Sheikh and his contemporaries played a critical role in shaping the trend of events and the aftermath of the Jihad. Two distinct categories of scholars were identified, i.e. the pious scholars and the venal scholars. The Sheikh recognized and respected the pious scholars of his time and related with them in the spirit of Islamic brotherhood and understanding and reached out to them to build a strong rapport with a view to building strong links and common ground for the promotion of Islamic knowledge and eradication of the ills of the society. His engagement with the venal scholars with a view to containing them entails a lot of lessons for contemporary Muslim scholars. The paper discusses the various challenges faced by the Sheikh in the course of his engagement with the scholars and how he successfully overcame them. The rules of such engagement have been related to the present situation in Nigeria with a view to finding possible solutions to the unfortunate trend of disputes and confrontational attitudes amongst contemporary scholars. Suggestions have been proffered on how scholars would respond more effectively to the contemporary challenges of the Muslim Ummah by adopting the exemplary conduct of Sheikh Uthman.

Their backgrounds, composition of membership, methodologies and patterns of activities have been analyzed in a general manner. The paper has identified the contributions of these groups in mobilizing the Muslim public in support of Shari'ah Implementation and in pressurizing the governors in Muslim majority states to adopt the implementation of Shari'ah.

Yet, because of the intricacies of human nature and the inherent weaknesses of man, manifested in his ignorance, greed, selfishness and arrogance, the attainment of this fundamental objective has continued to elude most human socio-political entities. The history of mankind has recorded numerous social upheavals, conflicts and wars of great magnitude and with serious destructive consequences to the human race. The causes of these events and happenings are varied and numerous, but in general, all are attributable to the factor of social injustice from within and without the socio-political entities established by man. This paper seeks to explore Islamic principles regulating good governance, particularly the establishment of social justice. It argues that Governments in contemporary Muslim societies and particularly in Nigeria should evolve the most appropriate machinery that will re-invigorate all the segments of the society, harness and redirect all the potential resources of the state, and ensure the establishment of social justice and a comprehensive societal development. The Islamic principles and approaches in establishing social justice are recommended as relevant and viable options.

The success of Government and its programmes depend largely upon an honest, dedicated, accountable and well-motivated Public service. This paper undertakes a critical review of the problem of corruption in Public service in Nigeria and why attempts to fight it have achieved little success. The Islamic alternative to the fight against corruption is introduced by the paper. Primary Islamic texts have been referred to and properly analysed and the Islamic principles and guidelines for Public service have been identified. The paper canvasses for a new orientation in Public service and the need to contextualize the Islamic principles and guidelines in order to fight contemporary manifestations of corruption, particularly in the Public service in Nigeria. Specific suggestions have been proffered for the guidance of Muslim Public servants and Governments of States that have adopted the implementation of Shari’ah.

The book is so far the oldest collection known to us concerning Islamic History and the biography of the Prophet (Pbuh). Other collections, especially on the biography of the Prophet (Pbuh), that were written during later periods, made extensive references to this book compiled by Ibn Hisham. The book has its distinctive style and methodology, which was most appropriate to the period in which it was written. It has also documented for us the essential sources of Islamic history and the principles of interpreting events that occurred in the early period of Muslim history. This paper is a contribution to the ongoing efforts by some contemporary Muslim scholars at redefining the methodology of documenting and analyzing Islamic history within the general framework of the principles established by early Muslim scholars.
