Carlos Spehar
Graduated in Agronomy at the Federal University of Lavras, Brazil; M.Sc in Plant Genetics and Breeding at the University of Wisconsin (1977) and Ph.D. in Plant Genetics, Breeding and Mineral Nutrition at the University of Cambridge, UK (1989). Researcher from 1974 to 2006 at the Brazilian Organization for Agricultural Development (Embrapa), contributed to soybean improvement, cultivar acquisition and commercial cropping technology in the savannahs. From the 1990’s has researched grain amaranth and quinoa, leading into pioneer recommendation of cultivar and technology. In addition, has contributed with the post-graduate studies on agronomy at the University of Brasilia, DF, Brazil, since the 1990’s, guiding several students on master and doctorate degrees. Since 2010 has lectured at the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine, FAV, from the University of Brasília teaching Introduction to Agronomy and Environmental Sciences, Industrial and Commodity Crops and Winter Crops at graduate level. At the post-graduate, teaches Plant Breeding and Integrated Production Systems. Several papers, books and book chapters have been published. The accumulated experience on research, teaching and extension have been used and shared in the academic and agricultural production environment. Research and development projects have been conducted with focus on less exploited crops for grain production, soil protection and agricultural diversification. Research lines comprise adaptation, selection, cultivar acquisition, technology advance and foment, aiming at introduction of new food and raw material sources into production systems. In addition, has acted as editor and peer reviewer of indexed journals and ad hoc consultant of national and international organizations as National Research and Development Council, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
