The History Press
Bognor Regis had the nineteenth pier to be built in the UK. The pier opened on 11 May 1865 & forever changed the way people viewed Bognor’s seafront. The pier was over 1,000 ft (305m) long and 18 ft (5.4m) wide & took over eighteen months to build at a cost of £ 5000. During WWI it was used by the army & during WWII it was renamed HMS St Barbara & used as a shore base for the Royal Navy. During the WWII, a section of the main walkway was removed to prevent the enemy using piers on which to land.
