Frank Street with its diversified demographic structure offers a vivid and compelling portrait in terms of social and cultural plurality. After a brief historical and physical introduction to these two peculiar spaces, this paper will especially investigate a series of physical changes that Frank Street underwent with the construction of the first and the second quays, which started in 1867, as well as with the construction of the new port. Essentially, the main aim of this investigation is to state how Frank Street was influenced by these modernizing constructions and how it adapted to its new location, becoming distant from the seashore and sliding to the inside of the region.

I would like to mention the site of the cemetery as I could acquire a sense from the insurance maps of Pervitich for Istanbul, the importance of the cemetery as both a historical and artistic concrete value, the missionary activities in the 19th century Ottoman Empire in order to find the correct connections together with changing dynamics in the state administration which come from Tanzimat and Islahat Edicts towards the non-Muslim population of the empire, and lastly different typical and stylistic features of the tombs in the cemetery in order to evaluate them as an artistic element in the visual culture.

As we know although many of the descriptions of Seyâhatnâme were written in an exaggerated manner or as an inventive fiction in its some parts by Evliya Çelebi, his notes remain a useful guide to the culture and lifestyles of the 17th century Ottoman Empire. Within a brief framework about his representation of the city with the help of my secondary sources, I would like to more specifically evaluate four important religious buildings (mosques) of Istanbul from the eyes of Evliya Çelebi as parallel with his pattern of the architectural representation of the city. One of them is Hagia Sophia. I chose this monument because I wonder about both the perception of Evliya Çelebi on the issue of Byzantine past, the historical heritage of the city, and also his representation of the monument. Secondly, I am going to mention his description of the Mosque of Mehmed II because of its symbolic meaning which is related to the conqueror image of Mehmed II. Thirdly, I would like to research about Evliya Çelebi’s narration of Süleymaniye Mosque because I think that the comparison of this mosque and Hagia Sophia from the eyes of Evliya Çelebi could be very fruitful in order to produce new interpretations about his perspective, aesthetic perception and political sensibilities. Lastly, I am going to investigate the mosque of Sultan Ahmed I from the perspective of Evliya Çelebi because the construction of this mosque is closer to his period, and at the same time it is a very remarkable monument for both the whole 17th century and its closeness to Hagia Sophia.

The people of this region maintained their distinct identity within the framework of conversion, its social, cultural (language, traditions, customs), political, economic, ideological, and psychological dimensions. On the subject of ethnicity, their historical backgrounds as Armenians, ethnic roots, migrations, cross-cultural relationships between Muslims, Lazs, Turks, and Georgians come true the question of cultural survival and the degree of assimilation for the people of this region. Within this interaction, how were they represented in their environments and also in state records? What are the components which form their own whole body of cultural structure?
