ECO-FRIENDLY PULPING OF RICE STEM BY TWIN-SCREW EXTRUDER: OPTIMIZATION OF COOKING TIME AND NaOH CONCENTRATION

In this study, rice stem pulping was performed using a co-rotating intermeshing twin-screw extrud... more In this study, rice stem pulping was performed using a co-rotating intermeshing twin-screw extruder as an eco-friendly method. The effects of NaOH concentration and cooking time during alkali pre-treatment on the chemical compositions and contents of the resulting pulp, and handsheet physical characteristics were investigated. Using a two-level factorial design and the Minitab software suite, equations relating each dependent variable to the independent variables were obtained. These equations predicted the experimental results for the dependent variables with errors of less than 30% for cooking times and NaOH concentrations in the ranges of 15-75 min and 1-2%, respectively. The results showed that the NaOH concentration had a greater effect on pulp and handsheet properties compared to cooking time. The rice stem could be pulped at a low NaOH concentration (1%) and low cooking time (15 minutes) using the twin-screw extruder at atmospheric boiling point, generating a pulp with a Kapp...

Comparison of Produced Film of Cellulose Nanofibers by Dried and Vacuum Filtrated Method from Unbleached Kraft Pulp of Kenaf Bast Fiber

Ai... more Nanofibrillated cellulose fibers were produced from unbleached kraft pulp of kenaf bast fiber. Air dried and vacuum filtrated films of cellulose nanofibers were produced and their density and tensile properties were investigated. Kenaf bast fiber unbleached kraft pulp has good potential for production of cellulose nanofibers by microfluidizer; so that the use of kenaf bast fiber unbleached kraft pulp suspension with consistency about 5.6% has the potential for cellulose nanofibers production. Transmission electron microscopy image showed the production of cellulose nanofibers with dimensions less than 100 nanometers. Although the apparent density of vacuum filtrated film was more than that of the air dried film (1105 compared to 1007 kg/m3), tensile strength index of the air dried film was more than that of the vacuum filtrated film (148 compared to 140 Nm/g). Tensile strength, tensile energy abortion index and strain at breaking percentage of the air dried film were more than those of the vacuum filtrated film too. However, the elastic modulus of vacuum filtrated film of cellulose nanofibers was more than that of the air dried film that it can be related to the apparent density different of these films.

Evaluation of Harvesting Time Effects and Cultivars of Kenaf on Papermaking

This study investigates the effect of six cultivars named Cubano, Niger, Cubano 2032, 9277, 7551 ... more This study investigates the effect of six cultivars named Cubano, Niger, Cubano 2032, 9277, 7551 and, 7566, of kenaf and three harvesting time stages on pulp and handsheet paper properties of kenaf, which were accomplished in north of Iran. Six cultivars of an Iranian kenaf (Hibiscus Cannabinus L.), were planted on 19 May 2007, and harvested at 85, 105, and 135 days after planting. It was understood that with the increase of plant age, the fiber yield increased. Maximum yield at each of three harvesting time stages was related to Niger. Consequently, if a high fiber yield is sought, Niger can be recommended. But if a paper with high strength properties is to be requested, Cubano 2032 is strongly associated with significant burst, tear, breaking length, and fold endurance even though its yield shows a bit lesser than Niger at short harvesting times.
