This was a qualitative study. Semi-structured interviews were done with the principals and counsellors of 5 schools in Istanbul. The data was collected by the researcher himself. The schools were selected from the schools which have the highest dropout rates in Istanbul. And from those which were located in the largest neighbourhoods of İstanbul, the most conveniently accessible ones were visited. The aim was to collect the opinions of two important actors within the school institution about the dropout issue and to bring the dropout related themes to light. The dropout related factors were attributed to the students, families, teachers, educational system, and elementary school applications. The factors found to be contributory to dropout were: Economic problems; official regulations for promotion to a higher grade; incorrect measurement and evaluation in the elementary school; misuse, misinterpretation and disregarding of orientation reports; problems related with family structure; tension between teachers and students; disciplinary problems; lack of confidence in the success of the youngster; lack of belief in the benefits and advantages of getting formal education; adaptation problems related with the change of the environment; and upheavals and fluctuations peculiar to adolescence.
