This paper seeks to explore the new landscape that has emerged during the period of the so-called "corona crisis" within arts (cultural) journalism, focusing specifically on theatre reporting and theatre reviewing. Drawing examples from the Greek and international print and online media, I aim to show the extent to which the sudden pause of artistic life and the rules of social distancing have reshaped not only the contents, formats and genres of journalistic writing for the arts, but also the very essence of the notion of cultural event and cultural news. The paper will consider the importance of the role of theatre journalists and critics in identifying and highlighting urgent issues within the arts in the context of the pandemic. It will also explore the new challenges that have emerged during (and, indeed, as a consequence of) the pandemic. Finally, it will ask if the changes in media coverage of the arts are only temporary, or if arts journalism is entering a new era.

Greek theatre artists, to talk about both contemporary crisis in general and the impact of this socio-economic phenomenon on the field of culture and, especially, on performing arts. Based on a large corpus of journalistic interviews with performers and directors, published in print and online Greek media since the outbreak of the crisis, our study collects and analyses inside data, views and positions on the subject, while it raises questions about the public image of the theatre artist in critical times, when esthetic concerns fuse inevitably into the socio-political experience.

ABSTRACT
This paper aims to explore the landscape of contemporary theater criticism in Cyprus, focusing in particular on methods, criteria and positions that critics and journalists-reviewers adopt, when evaluating domestic or international stage productions. Based on a corpus of reviews published in Cypriot newspapers, magazines and online media, our study seeks to define the cultural and generic specificity of these texts, while a number of relevant issues are discussed: the professional status and background of the critics, their argumentation, interpretation and evaluation strategies and, finally, the current state of theatre in Cyprus as reflected in critical discourse and the local media.

Through an interdisciplinary approach that combines television studies and theater theory, our study focuses specifically on the presence of theater and drama on Greek television, seeking to define the mechanisms which allow the transformation of the live stage event into a media product. Discussing TV programs such as theatre shows, recorded performances, screen plays and the legendary “Monday Theatre” (Theatro tis Defteras), we aim to explain in what way broadcast technology impacts on theatre aesthetics and spectatorship and how television productions of theatre plays, associating cultural with commercial engagements, can lead to a more creative television programming.

By analyzing three documentary productions a) The Laramie project (Moisés Kaufman & Tectonic Theatre project), b) Hate Radio (Milo Rau & International Institute of Political Murder) and c) Min(d)ing Ibsen: An Enemy of the People meets the People (Korina Vasileiadou & Charis Pechlivanidis-National Theatre of Northern Greece), we aim to show in what way documentary theatre contributes to the politico-social awareness of both the artist and the audience and to what extent this kind of performance has the power to enhance critical thinking and effective involvement in the life of the «polis», operating, finally, as a vehicle for what is called «active citizenship».

More specifically, it aims to explore the ways in which opinion columns embody literary characteristics and techniques of fiction, shaping a kind of hybrid texts, which challenge the usual generic standards of journalistic writing. Recent articles from newspapers and magazines are analyzed on the basis of an interdisciplinary approach, combining the literary theory to the analysis of journalistic discourse.

Based on an extensive reference sample of dramatic texts and performances from both the Greek and the international stage, the present paper is an attempt to explore ideological, sociological and aesthetic issues of the reality trend in contemporary theatre. Debating upon hot social problems, but mainly dramatizing current events, which have already gained media attention, mixing facts and fiction and using authentic documents from primary sources, the new forms of documentary theatre tend to adopt, in our viewpoint, the principles, methods and processes of mass communication systems. Challenging notions of reality, truth and objectivity, such projects constitute a live cultural platform, where information values fuse with the critical analysis and interpretation of modern world.
