It is seen that the crucial property that has changed over time concerns the ability of this fo rm to fun ction as main verb and its overall 'dep endent ' status in Modem Greek Such a develop ment could be seen as the expected result of the greater degree of gramm ancalisation of a subordinating mood marker in the sense of Bybe e et aJ. 1994. However, on the assumption that Modern Greek lacks the feature {subj unctive] at the level of verbal morphology, and that the relevant fo rms are best described in terms ofthe category ofAspect, the question is raised whether the semantics of this particular for m has motivated its p resent f unction independently, as the combination of the features {-past] and [wperfective] can itself account fo r the distribution of the relevant fo rms synchronically. It is therefore suggested that the semantics of Aspect has interf ered with the development of a Mood marker in a way not predicted in the relevant gra mmancalisation paths.

It is seen that the crucial property that has changed over time concerns the ability of this form to function as main verb and its overall 'dependent' status in Modern Greek. Such a development could be seen as the expected result of the greater degree of grammaticalisation of a subordinating mood marker in the sense of Bybee et al. 1994. However, on the assumption that Modern Greek lacks the feature [subjunctive] at the level of verbal morphology, and that the relevant forms are best described in terms of the category of Aspect, the question is raised whether the semantics of this particular form has motivated its present function independently, as the combination of the features [-past] and [+perfective] can itself account for the distribution of the relevant forms synchronically. It is therefore suggested that the semantics of Asp...

Each particle may be seen to have a number of distinct uses, which may be seen as instances of homonymy. It is argued, however, that the assumption of polysemy in the semantics of each particle can account for their overall behaviour. Crucially, polysemy need not depend on etymology or the assumption of grammaticalisation. On the one hand, in the context of grammatical categories, polysemy can only mean multiple category membership; e.g. each of the three particles under discussion appears to implicate more than one of the following categories: tense, aspect, mood and modality. On the other hand, the syntactic behaviour of particles is expected to differ from that of both inflectional categories and major lexical classes.

We conducted a survey of all textbooks published from 1980 to date and processed all publishing characteristics in quantitative terms as well as a questionnaire-based survey of the opinion of faculty teaching linguistics in Greek universities. Based on the qualitative analysis of these data we found that textbooks have developed substantially over the last 30 years in both their readability and usability attainment and so they appear to serve their educational functions with success. However, there is an increasing need for new textbooks, preferably, originally written in Greek, or sufficiently adapted to the Greek language, in many fields of both microlinguistics and macrolinguistics and, in particular, in generative syntax, formal semantics and phonology and more titles in morphology and lexicography. Furthermore, there is also urgent need for (more or up-to-date) textbooks in interdisciplinary fields including cognitive linguistics, psycho / neurolinguistics (including L1 / L2 acquisition) and dialectology with systematic reference to Greek as well as critical approaches to linguistics (e.g. critical discourse analysis).

The two languages seem to select different options: whereas English uses the ‘simple present’ to guarantee the completion of the act, the use of the imperfective present in Greek seems to be more problematic. It is argued that both languages favour the morphologically unmarked non-past form to describe a present realis act. Thus, our results corroborate the thesis that performatives need not be analyzed as declarations but can instead be derived from statements.

Section 19.2 first addresses an uncontroversial aspect marker, the progressive, and the basic tense opposition in English, that between the past and the non-past. It is then explained why the perfect and the conditional in English are at the interface of tense and aspect, and, tense, modality, and mood, respectively. The question whether there is a future tense in English is also addressed. Further to the presentation of tense and aspect as morphological markers, a number of ways in which they affect the sentence and larger texts are also discussed. Section 19.3 offers a more detailed analysis of Aktionsart: the main situation types are defined, the ways Aktionsart impacts on the perception of time movement are discussed, and it is shown how the notion of coercion has been used to explain the dynamics.
