business' contribution to quality-of-life
Economic issues for the poor in developing countries are present: the poor often
experience business activities as constraining influences upon their quality of life
(Ekici and Peterson, 2009). This comprises a risk and in this regard if we refer to
current literature of the sociology of risk, it is defined as social constructed situation,
with probable negative impact on the well-being of an individual or a group of
individuals. Social risk is distinguished from individual risks by the low capacity or
incapacity of the individuals to avoid the risk situation. The impact of the actual
financial crisis even in Albania can be taken as an example that happen during a post
communism transition period. The aim is to describe how the transition causes
vulnerability and view business' contribution to quality-of-life. Methodology relies
on literature review and ongoing case of economic crisis in Albania. Lastly, it is
concluded that social vulnerability brings in the social relations strengthening the
focus in the social conversion factors. Social risks are negative conversion factors,
which restrict the capability and functioning development of the individual. In this
regard, especially vulnerable to poverty are households in remote rural areas, most
ethnic minorities, children, women, and single elderly people who suffer the effects
of market changes during and after an economic crisis. Based on given context
derives the suggestion that the certain coping mechanisms can play an important role
in different levels of responsibility for social developments of a future contemporary
society.
