FIRST SOUTH CAROLINA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY Civil War Print by Don Troiani
The First South Carolina Volunteers were a Union Army Regiment of the American Civil War composed of escaped slaves from South Carolina and Florida. The regiment was re-designated the 33rd US Colored Infantry on February 8, 1864. They were unique in their designation as black troops fighting for the Union.

At the Argonne in late fall of 1918, to the right is a Marine grenadier of the 4th Marine Brigade. He is armed with an M1903 fitted with a French VB grenade launcher modified to fit the American rifle. He accompanies two Marines of the 5th Marine Brigade who make up a Browning Automatic Rifle team. Put into production in 1918, very few BARs made it to the front lines before the Armistice was signed. Even in that short span, it more than proved its worth however.
