I am making, "Never Fail Pie Crust" for my Thanksgiving pies. This recipe is in my cookbook on page 126. How to order my cookbook is in comments.... | By South Alabama Cooking | Good morning everyone it's early morning out here on the old homestead just breaking day and I'm in the kitchen going to do some cooking today so I'm going to start demonstrating some of my holiday recipes for y'all and the first thing we're going to start out with today is Never Fail Pie Crust so this will demonstrate how to make a homemade pie crust okay let's turn around here to the bar here's my bowl I already have in the bowl two and a half cups of plain or all-purpose flour and I have one cup of shortening, one fourth teaspoon of salt and I've already been, I've cut the shortening into the flour. See, it's all crumbly and we have some other ingredients that we want to add to this. So, what we want to add next is one fourth cup of water, and we have one tablespoon of white vinegar Okay, let's stir that just a little bit. And then we have one large egg that we want to add to that and that is our ingredients for this pie crust. Now, what we want to do stir this up good mix it good and it will make us a nice dough and then we will flour the counter here get a piece of this dough out and roll it out and make it into the shape that we need for our pie crust okay? So, we've almost got this mixed here. Now, I got this recipe from my mother-in-law, Patsy Fisher in Oklahoma. Years and years and years ago and she is a fabulous cook. She actually she gave this recipe to my husband David and then when me and David got married he brought it with him here to Alabama Alright, here's our dough. Right there. Let's put some flour here on our counter. This will keep the dough from sticking to our counter or it will keep it from sticking so badly. I'm going to take a piece out needed a little bit, not much. This is a kind of a delicate pie crust. Makes a nice, tasty, flaky pie crust. Okay, I'm just going to kind of pat it out here some and then we'll roll it out with our What do you call them things? Can't think. Our roller, our dough roller. That's not what you call it. All of y'all are hollering at me right now what the name of it is. Okay. Now, we sprinkle a little bit of flour on the top of this dough. Rub it in a little bit. Alright, here we go. See? Let's do that here. I used to know what this was called before I started the video. I knew what it was called. Now, I can't remember. Just want to kind of roll it out thin and and how thick or thin you have your pie crust that's just up to you whatever you like If your pie crust breaks apart some, that's no big deal. You just pinch it back together. Okay, here is my pie plate right here and I have three of these and they were given to me as wedding gifts. Years, mini moons ago. Okay. Let's see. I should have a knife. Alright, I'm going to cut this pie crust here. Kinda try to cut it round to fit my pie plate it. Got a spatula to help get it up off of the bar. Alright, I think we can probably pick that up. Let me kind of move stuff around here so you can see my pile plate. Alright, here's my pop plate. Now, I'm going to try to just kind of fold this pie crust over some. There we go and that'll make it easier to pick up. We'll put it in the pie plate and then we'll unfold it and then we can make any adjustments that we need to make to it once we get it in here. Okay, there we go. We've got it in here. Kinda press it in place. See, it's kind of torn right here. Just press it down. Press it in place. That'll be fun. And the edges, you want to just kind of pinch em up like a pretty little design with it I was I was at Tanner Williams Holiness Church years ago that's where I attended years ago we lived over that way and we had some kind of an event where we were you know making food it was probably a homecoming or a Monday night kickoff service for the Allentown March meeting something like that and so we had cooked all the ladies had cooked stuff now I don't have enough crust right here to make the design right here. So, I'm going to cut me some crust and add it, okay? Add me some crust here but anyway, I had made a I had made a pie. I had made a lemon meringue pie and I had made this homemade pie crust and hm one of the girls there and I was I was probably in my mid thirties one of my friends there one of my girlfriends she came to me just a laughing and she said Denise did you make that pie and I said yeah yeah I made it and she said she said when I saw that homemade pie crust I told so and so I can't remember who it was she said I told so and so I know some made that pie. She said, because it's got a homemade pie crust. I know some old lady made that pie and we just laughed and laughed because I was in my mid thirties probably something like that, you know, but she was sure that the old lady had made that pie crust or had made that pie. Mm hmm. Okay, let me dampen my finger. This don't want to stick. So, I'm going to put a little water right here where it'll stick better. Okay, you stick on there. Alright, we have a homemade pie crust here y'all. See how simple and easy and quick that is. Now, some people you know, if you may not have time, time to put in to make a homemade pie crust and if you don't, that's perfectly fine or you may just not desire to make a homemade pie crust and if you don't, that's perfectly fine. It is perfectly acceptable to go to the store and buy a store-bought pie crust. That's no problem. Okay, so here it is. This is our homemade pie crust. Now, depending on what your recipe is, some recipes, you you don't pre bake the pie crust. You use a raw pie crust just like this. Then, there's some recipes that will say pre bake your pie crust. So, you'll just have to look at your recipe and see what it calls for. Now, when if I'm going to pre bake my pie crust, I take a fork and I prick off my pie crust like this to keep it from bubbling up. Okay, so that's that's the simple, easy way just to make you a pie crust and then you can make your pies. Alright, y'all have a good day and we'll see you next time with another great video.
