Smooth hydrangeas can take the hardest prune of any variety. I cut mine to between 15 -18 inches after we reach full dormancy ( consistently under 32° at night). Because I’ve planted wintergem boxwoods in front of them, they are camouflaged during the winter. I have @provenwinners Incrediballs across my front porch, but there are other smooth varieties to choose from.
