-Peter Pincus-

Leading ceramic artist Peter Pincus has created an exceptional body of colorful, functional porcelain work exclusive to Studio KotoKoto. Peter created this work in order to reexamine functionalism in contemporary ceramics. This marks the first time he has used his unique making process to develop plates and bowls intended for tabletop use. The collection also includes a series of decanter and cup sets as well as groupings of functional bottles and tumblers, that when viewed together, act as three-dimensional ceramic paintings. The colorful pieces demonstrate Peter’s exceptional grasp of both form and surface treatment. In fact, Peter devised a sophisticated method of hybridized wheel throwing, moldmaking, and slipcasting to achieve the forms he desires. Those forms then act as canvases for his stunning explorations of color using layers of tinted porcelain. This year Peter won the NICHE Award in the Ceramics/Professional group for his work, “Tint.” The award was created to celebrate excellence and innovation in fine craft in the United States and Canada. Peter was also recognized by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) while a MFA student in Alfred University’s prestigious program. Finally, his work was featured on the cover of Ceramics Monthly, the most widely-read publication among American ceramic artists. Peter works at his own studio in Penfield, NY, and spends much of his free time sanding plaster, playing with colored slip, and taping bisque-ware when not co-parenting daughter Evelyn with his wife Laurie.
