Designed to meet NGSS and the new Michigan Science Standards, “What Controls My Health?” is a coordinated set of classroom and community activities intended to give youth and adults an understanding of modern concepts in genetics using Type 2 diabetes as the real-world context.
A New Era for the NCCSTS and the NSTA - National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science (NCCSTS)
This interrupted case is based on a genome wide association study (GWAS) that identified the genetic variation causing some inhabitants of the Solomon Islands to have blond hair. The case illustrates the connection between genotype and phenotype, and an application of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Using thought-provoking questions students learn about the genetics and the biochemistry of the hair color trait and how a single genetic variation can influence phenotype.
