Fedoras

I thought it was high time to start listing what I know about fedoras. Here you will see different style of hats by Crown, Ribbon and Bow, Brim Width and Color (one of the most important aspects of any hat). Also I will be throwing in some handling techniques for the hats themselves.

Most people recognize the fedora in their two most popular colors, gray and brown. Black hats are for FUNERALS, WEDDINGS and TUXEDOS gents, so leave that one at home most nights. For people starting out with a new hat, yes get a gray hat first, it will go with anything! But once started, branch out a little, bold colors and some good coordination can make for a smashing ensemble.
Here was something I've been looking to find for some time... this was known as the Slant crown, I'm not a fan of it personally but it goes to show you that there are some very unique ways to style a fedora.
This is a fine fedora... Notice the neutral tan color of the hat body, nothing too special, but it's made special with the copper ribbon.

I wanted to give very special recognition to Optimo Hats seen here. These folks truly are master craftsman. www.optimohats.com

Another beautiful navy hat, you can just see the unique stripe in the middle of the bow. If you ever talk to a Fedora Aficionado do not ask what makes a hat a fedora. This is a hot topic of debate amongst hat folk. Usually a fedora is a hat of fur felt body with a brim over two inches and a crown higher than four inches. Anything else tends to be in a grey area... best not to ask.

Shark Gil bow, a unique answer to those afraid of having a bow on their hat thinking it too feminine. I do not think that, but this is my favorite bow. Very streamlined and classy, especially in a light great color for the hat body.

Again a great two tone body/ribbon look. But here the crown has a very unique rake... the rake of a fedora is the overall shape of the top of the crown. Most of the ones I show are forward rakes but here is a medium rake where the highest point of the crowns edge is in the middle almost above the bow.

Navy... this hat and many others are made by Optimo Hats Chicago... one of the best milliners in the world. Here I wanted to talk about the color of hats. Look at this great two tone example. The light silver ribbon pairs perfectly with the rich navy body of the fedora. I have a hat very similar to this.

Another really good example of a traditional center dent, you can see here how the crease is literally done by hand, the slight imperfection of the dent adds to the overall charm of the hat.
Beaver Brand 5x Green Homburg
A very nice center dent fedora in a forest green. So with center dent crowns you basically have the dome of the crown shoved in as if someone chopped at it with their hand and ran it front to back... clear? Yeah, it's the best way I can describe it.
Penman Hats All Beaver Light Grey Indy Style Fedora
A classic center dent crown with a front pinch (the areas at the front of the hat.) Speaking of the pinch, most folks tend to grab a hat by the pinch and the crown... DON'T! It ruins the hats shape. Always handle the hat by the brim, especially if its straw as they are very delicate.
Bronco Sue Rebuild with Roy Rogers Crease and Brown Ribbon
A very interesting crown, the Pork Pie. Named for literally the pie crust shaped crown, this one is unique as it is also a teardrop shape.
Vintage Silhouettes Natural Fedora w/ Red Ribbon with Art Bow
Here is a very nice teardrop crown. Now the actual shape determines the type. There are many many types of crowns but this is my favorite.
Here is a slightly different Shark Gil, notice that it starts at the top of the ribbon and moves down towards the brim. The two tones ribbon highlights this.
