Lamu is a small town on Lamu Island, in kenya, near the Somalia border. Lamu town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it was one of the original Swahili settlements along coastal East Africa. The town's history is marked by a Portuguese invasion then the Omani domination, like in Zanzibar. The streets of Lamu are very narrow, so there are no cars, only donkeys to carry everything! © Eric Lafforgue www.ericlafforgue.com

Carved Swahili mosque door - Lamu Archipelago, Kenya by david schweitzer, via Flickr Swahili Design, Swahili Culture, African Doors, Mosque Door, Door Tattoo, Lamu Island, Lamu Kenya, Dark Continent, Cultural Crafts

Traditional Swahili doors of the Lamu archipelago are made of hardwood from the mainland and are usually inscribed with passages from the Koran. The ornamental brass knobs likely have their origins in India and the Persian Gulf. The doors are now protected as part of Kenya’s national heritage. © All rights to these photos and descriptions are reserved. View On Black
