Oscar-nominated production designer Patrice Vermette shares how his team created the immersive, otherworldly look of the new film.

Castle Caladan, ancestral home of House Atreides. Personal work. I've recorded hours of screen capture, of the making of this image. Once I've sifted out the superfluous stuff, and spliced it all together, you'll have the first of the art tutorials I've been promising. Soon...ish.

This was one of my favourite images from the project, it introduces the ancient and powerful sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit. Setting it at night on Caladan amongst the swirling rain and mist gave the scene a spooky, mysterious quality that I loved. The 'egg within an egg' ship design was based on an early design sketch from Sam Hudecki, and nods to the Bene Gesserit's careful management of genetic lines throughout the universe.
