Batman Rookies and Other Key Early Cards
The idea of a fictional character from comic books having a rookie may be a weird concept to some collectors, but Batman trading cards — fueled by the debut of the live-action Batman TV — burst onto the scene in 1966. That year saw three different Batman sets. One of them is quite valuable, one is likely still undervalued (investment opportunity), and one is a deck of playing cards that produced some cool oddball rookies. In this post I’ll walk though all the Batman rookies of 1966.

The Cal Ripken Jr. Rookie Buyer's and Collector's Guide
Cal Ripken Jr. has four cards that are widely considered rookie cards, but that isn’t universally agreed on because one of them is from a traded set. Beyond those four cards, other great 1982 Cal Ripken cards can also be considered rookies. In this article, I’ll walk through all of these rookie cards and a few cool minor league cards that pre-date all of them.
Joe Montana Rookies and Other Key Early Cards
Collectors typically think of one card as the Joe Montana rookie, but there is another obscure card that is sometimes considered a Montana rookie. In this article I’ll discuss the 1981 Topps, the 1981 Holsum Disc, and a few other early Joe Montana cards. The 1981 Topps Joe Montana Rookie Card, #216, is one of the most recognizable football cards of the 1980s. Joe Montana took the NFL by storm as a high-profile and charismatic quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers dynasty.
The Patrick Roy Rookie Buyer's and Collector's Guide
The 1986-87 O-Pee-Chee Patrick Roy #53 is the card most collectors consider the Patrick Roy rookie card. However, there were several other great cards made during that year and even one from the year before. Because of the number of sets made during this era, there should be something for every collector no matter the budget. In this article I’ll walk through all of the Patrick Roy rookie and key early vintage cards.
Jerry Rice Rookies and Other Key Early Cards
There is more than one Jerry Rice rookie card, but I consider the 1986 Topps card to be the primary card to own. In this post we’ll take a look at that card — and we’ll discuss other Jerry Rice rookies and early key cards. The 1986 Topps Jerry Rice Rookie Card, #161, is one of the most sought-after football cards of the 1980s. Jerry Rice caught for more than 900 yards in his rookie year and went on to smash every lifetime receiving record.
Greg Maddux Rookies and Other Key Early Cards
By 1987 we’re in the heart of the wax junk era of sports cards where manufacturers are capitalizing on the popularity of the hobby by making mass quantities of mostly worthless cards. That means Greg Maddux has a lot of rookie cards, but not a lot of them are extremely valuable. Readers of this blog will come to learn that I’m a big fan of Topps Tiffany cards, but for Greg Maddux I consider the Canadian version of one of his common rookie cards to be his best.
Emmitt Smith Rookies and Other Key Early Cards
Emmitt Smith was a rookie in 1990 and, because of that, there is no shortage of rookie cards available to collectors. The 1990 Score Supplemental Emmitt Smith rookie card #101T is the primary rookie, but that’s looking at it purely from a value standpoint. In this article I’ll discuss that card, but I’ll also cover all of the other Emmitt Smith rookies issued in 1990 and I’ll also touch on my favorite Emmitt Smith pre-rookie.
Barry Sanders Rookies and Other Key Early Cards
The 1989 Score Barry Sanders rookie card #257 is one of the most iconic cards produced during the wax junk era. It has very good value for a card produced in this time, but there are some other Barry Sanders rookie cards collectors should be aware of. In addition to the Score rookie, he has a traded set rookie, a less-expensive mass-produced rookie, and an obscure regional issue rookie. In this article I’ll walk you through all of those.
