Among these, the bio-psychosocial model and the relational and intersectionality approaches compatible with it come first. The Primary aim of this study is to apply alternative models to the deficiencies of the bio-medical model and to show their contributions. For this purpose, physical, psychological, cognitive and social factors, which Gate Control Theory accepts as components of pain, were comparatively examined based on the life stories of seven participants, four of whom were women, with an average age of 75 years. In the light of the principles of relational and intersectional approaches that reject essentialism, focus on uncertainties, and try to reveal difference and diversity, the findings are discussed with the relevant current literature. Research findings show that as the participants get older, their physical pro...

In order to overcome the “institution” and “occupation” distinction which is essential in military sociology studies, the focus has been on “uncertainties” rather than “essentialism” from a relational sociological perspective. In this context, both uncertainties in social relations (ambage) and uncertainties in values (ambiquity) have been tried to be analyzed by making use of sociology literature. The originality of this study is that it was conducted with a law enforcement force with military status trying to cope with foreigners coming as a result of irregular migration in their own country, instead of military personnel who were previously employed in a foreign society outside their own country (Azari et al., 2010). Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, an online survey study was carried out...

The main research problem in the study is that individuals who are stigmatized in the society in various ways do not have many opportunities to cope with the problems they experience. The purpose of this article, which is based on a broader study is to demonstrate the process of constructing a new identity on the formerly stigmatized individuals with sport as a game. This study is based on a holistic perspective along with the methodology of the Grounded Theory. The Grounded Theory methodology embraces the same sport, aiming to do data collection and analysis together, and have the potential to produce a bottom-up theory and practice. For example, the data collected systematically by the athlete or trainer during training or competition can turn into a training program for the development of the athlete or team. On the other hand, in Grounded Theory appl...

Among many others one of the most important impacts of these reforms is that they caused an increase in violence towards physicians. Primary aim of this paper is to show the links that exists between health reforms and violence towards physicians in hospitals. Social meta-analysis based on comparisons of the findings of recent studies is used to achieve the above mentioned purpose of this study. Findings revealed that both makers of reformers and physicians should be aware of the fact that changes in the structure of patient-physician relationship should be made for the sake of the community. *Corresponding author Aytul Kasapoglu, Department of Sociology, Ankara University, Faculty of Letters, Turkey, Tel: 90-312-229 09 01;

In this paper we aim to explore HIV-positive people's relationships with significant others such as family members, friends, sexual partners, employers and health professionals in order to present the patients' perceptions about stigma and attitudes that lead to pro-social or anti-social behavior towards them. We carried out a qualitative study based on in-depth interviews with 16 PLWHIV in order to understand the conditions of people living with HIV/AIDS in Turkey. Our results revealed that except for family relations, the fear of contagion is the main obstacle for HIV-positive people's relations with others. HIV-positive people are severely afflicted with...

Health issues, especially global health issues, are important subjects of study for many sociolog... more Health issues, especially global health issues, are important subjects of study for many sociologists. For example, the spread of influenza as a pandemic affects a large number of people and their emotions in terms of fear, becoming a social problem instead of a psychological issue. Because of uncertainties, what is happening and what people should do during global threats is not clear for many people generally and during pandemics specifically. The primary aim of this paper is to show the construction process of fear and risk by conducting a systematic review of former studies about the influenza that occurred in Turkey during the last 10 years. It is assumed that a combination of relational sociology and the sociology of disaster and development will provide an appropriate theoretical framework. In other words, H. White and his uncertainty typology along with A.E. Collins' classification are both used to define the construction process of fear as a culture, starting with uncertainty and moving to alienation and finally normalization. Findings from this study, which are supported by N. Elias' and U. Beck's methodological considerations, revealed that uncertainties may lead to negative consequences, such as alienation. Due to conflicting information, people find themselves in a dilemma and they stop following norms and rules in terms of normlessness. Normlessness, as a subdivision of alienation along with meaningless, might result in negative actions, such as not getting vaccinated. Liminality, turning points and footing are also used to describe the construction process of fear and risk. Results also showed that over a 10-year period many things are normalized and people no longer panic as easily.

The butterfly effect, the most commonly used metaphor to describe globalisation, explains the interconnectivity of world systems. The worst, but possibly not the last, example of globalisation was the mortgage crises in the USA that occurred in 2007 and extended all over Europe, including Turkey. Many European governments applied austerity measures to their struggling economies, but these budget cuts mostly affected vulnerable groups, such as women, children and migrants. Previous inequalities were deepened, and gendered austerity became evident compared with other groups who faced risks. By focusing on gendered austerity as a research problem, this study seeks to answer the following questions: How do poor women describe their living experiences? Are there any differences between recent years and longer? What are the most important sociodemographic characteristics of these women? How do they cope with their conditions, and what are their survival strategies?The extent to which the feminisation of poverty is observed and why women are more sensitive to budget cuts are discussed based on interviews using oral history. The researcher attempted to write the women's own stories without reconstructing them by reflecting on controversies, as well as silences. Findings revealed that the women had hidden injuries, and they blamed the state for making them angry. The women were also using "economy of talk" by remaining silent.

The primary aim of this article is to identify the essence of this problem in sociology education based on students’ and sociologists’ views. To achieve the study objectives, a phenomenological study based on standpoint theory was designed and conducted with 25 students and 20 working sociologists. The findings reveal that sociology education is quite far removed from being considered a professional education. Theoretical courses without field studies are not in accordance with the requirements of both the public and private sectors. Students and sociologists are quite romantic regarding what sociology is and what sociologists do. Students mostly begin the study of sociology involuntarily and without a clear understanding of the discipline. Sometimes students find themselves in a paradox or dilemma: Although the knowl...

A sample of 248 students in the 8 th-grade from four primary schools with different socioeconomic family backgrounds completed a questionnaire on their socio-demographic characteristics and health complaints. Findings revealed that adolescents are not homogeneous in terms of their socio-economical backgrounds and infrastructural living conditions. The distribution of illnesses/complaints compared among schools groups, only catching cold was significantly different. Factor analysis results showed that there are three groups of diseases that differ from one another namely psychological, physical and other. Adolescents' perception about their general health varied among the four schools. According to the regression analysis between three factor groups of illness/complains and socio-demographic and personal characteristics of students, only number of children and working status of fathers showed a significant difference among the socio-demographic characteristics, while weight and height among the personal characteristics. Although the first findings suggested that respondents' physical characteristics affected their physical complaints, it seemed that several complaints could also be affected by social and cultural context.

Since sociology and sociological education started in 1914, there have been many evaluations of sociology in Turkey. The present study differs from others in its evaluation methods.The basic assumption of this study was that none of the sociological studies could be carried out within the confines of only one sociological subfield such as economic or educational sociology. Based on this assumption, a six-point evaluation tool known as a composite index was used in each study. After collecting publications, a group of sociologists held comprehensive discussions and allocated the proportion of the composition for each sociological subfield represented in each study. The results, based on sociologists' published studies in seven well-established departments in Turkey, showed that there were major differences between departments. Among them was Middle East Technical University (METU), where teaching was in English and many staff members had been educated in England or the United States. The sociology department in that university was the leader in almost every field studied.

The analysis is based on field research conducted a year after the 17 August 1999 East Marmara earthquake where 18000 people died; 50000 people injured; 5000 buildings collapsed and 340000 of them damaged; 14513 businesses closed; 150000 people became unemployed; and 129338 forced to live in prefabricated houses. The research primarily aims to understand the support needs by focusing mainly on the following issues about the earthquake survivors: (i) which and what support types and areas are mostly desired by them; (ii) which independent variables are the most effective on their demands; and (iii) from which persons or institutions have they received support and wanted to be supported by. Marginal development of the civil society; high degree of expectations of almost everything from the state; psychological factors being less influential compared with West and education being the primary influential factor are some of the significant results of this research.
