Particles clustering is observed for different pairs of Stokes number and Froude number and different spectral power laws (1.4 p 2.1). The main focus is to identify and then quantify the effect of p on the clustering attractor-by attractor we mean the set of points in the physical space where the particles settle when time tends to infinity. It is observed that spectral power laws can have a dramatic effect on the attractor shape. In particular, we observed a new attractor type which was not present in previous studies for Kolmogorov spectra (p = 5/3).

Patients and methods: This was a prospective study of patients undergoing singletract PCNL while prone, conducted at a university hospital. All patients had noncontrast-enhanced computed tomography within 3 weeks of the procedure. Only patients with a unilateral procedure and radio-opaque stones were included. The five variables of the STONE nephrolithometry score were calculated before the procedure. The stone-free rates were assessed with a plain abdominal film at 4 weeks and complications were graded using the modified Clavien system. Results: In all, 107 patients were included in the final analysis. Overall, 80% of patients were rendered stone-free. Among the individual variables, a larger stone (P = 0.002) and the involvement of multiple calyces (P = 0.04) were associated with residual stones, while tract length (skin-to-stone distance), stone density and presence of hydronephrosis were not. Patients who were rendered stone-free had a statistically significant lower overall STONE score than those with residual stones, at 7.24 vs. 8.14 (P = 0.02). The score also correlated with operative duration, which was significantly

This untreated domestic wastewater is badly affecting the ecosystem. In the present study, we have tried to develop activated carbon based abatement technique for domestic wastewater. Dalbergia sissoo and Cedrus deodara saw dust was used for the preparation of activated carbons (ACs), using different activating agents (BaCl2, H3PO4, and H2SO4). The efficiency and potential of developed ACs for Color, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) removal was investigated in batch mode experimentation. Different operating parameters like contact time, COD and BOD load, pH and activated carbon amount were also investigated. Statistical analysis showed that every AC is significantly diverse in their potential for domestic wastewater treatment. Dalbergia sissoo based AC was most proficient; reduced 87% COD, 87% BOD and 93% color. The results of this study can...

Discharge of wastewater (containing heavy metals) without treatment leads to the damage to all functions of ecosystem. The present study is the continuation of previous work. Previously plant based activated carbons were prepared and used for the removal of COD and color and show removal efficiency of 93% and 100%, respectively. In the present study the same activated carbons are used for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Activated carbons were prepared from saw dust of Dalbergia sissoo, Cedrus deodara and Eucalyptus spp., using H3PO4, H2SO4 and BaCl2 as activating agents. These raw materials are of low cost and exhibit greater efficiency for Cr(VI) removal. Statistical analysis revealed that all the three saw dusts and activating agents differ significantly in their physiochemical parameters. The efficiency o...

This industrial wastewater (IWW) contains number of toxic chemicals, and their entry in natural water streams disturbs the whole ecosystem. Out of many physical and chemical methods for treating IWW, nature based systems are gaining popularity being more eco-friendly, less laboriously and economical. One way is to irrigate forest with IWW and the toxic material will be taken up by plants and is stored for longer time. The present study is based on the same principle and is the part of mega/intensive project. We conducted germination (irrigated with different concentration of IWW) studies on 8 tree species. Only 4 responded well in the following sequence; Dalbergia sissoo L. > Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth > Bauhinia purpurea L. > Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre. Germination %, germination time, seedling length and seedling fre...

In such analysis workflows, cell nuclei segmentation is typically the first step and is followed by cell body segmentation, feature extraction, and subsequent data analysis workflows. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that the first steps of high-content analysis are done accurately in order to guarantee correctness of the final analysis results. In this paper, we present a novel cell nuclei image segmentation framework which exploits robustness of graph cut to obtain initial segmentation for image intensity-based clump splitting method to deliver the accurate overall segmentation. By using quantitative benchmarks and qualitative comparison with real images from high-content screening experiments with complicated multinucleate cells, we show that our method outperforms other state-of-the-art nuclei segmentation methods. Moreover, we provide a modular and easy-to-use implementation of the method for a widely used platform.
Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) is a well know globular protein having the tendency to form aggregates... more Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) is a well know globular protein having the tendency to form aggregates in the macromolecular assemblies. Its three dimensional structure is composed of three domains, each one is formed by six helices, and its secondary structure is essentially alpha helix. The structure of BSA shows stability at room temperature but as temperature increases results in formation of soluble aggregates through disulphide and non covalent bonds. The simplest of the aldehydes is formaldehyde (FA). It is a bioactive and fatal compound, naturally present in human habitation. Formaldehyde, existing in all kinds of cells, may have some different and unknown physiological functions and may be related with some substantial human diseases and their pathology. The possible role of formaldehyde in the formation of beta-amyloid aggregation related to the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has been reported. The research further showed the high expression of SSAO colocalized with Abet...

ABSTRACT Bioprocess scale-up from optimized flask cultivations to large industrial fermentations ... more ABSTRACT Bioprocess scale-up from optimized flask cultivations to large industrial fermentations carries technical challenges and economical risks. Essentially, the prediction of optimal process conditions in large fermentations based on small scale experiments is non-trivial. For example, common statistical methods encounter problems with the high-dimensional, small sample size and, on the other hand, the use of various scale-up criteria requires a priori knowledge that may be difficult to obtain. We propose a novel computational scale-up approach applicable to various bioprocesses. The method bases on regularized linear and logistic regression. With embedded feature selection, it automatically identifies the most influential parameters and predicts their values in large scale. In addition, the method predicts the resulting large scale yield. As a case study, we examined the production of a cytotoxic compound. We predicted scale-up from flask and 2L to 30L fermentations and found that, in both cases, the product yield predictions are close to experimentally observed yields.

Nanowires can be grown on a number of different surfaces including silicon, quartz, Al 2 O 3 and aluminum nitride (AlN) by first coating the substrates with a thin layer of gold. The as grown NWs are tens of microns long and ∼50–200 nm in diameter and exhibit characteristics of the vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) growth mechanism.

In particular, the integration of multiple data sets causes that these needs cannot be properly addressed by regression models that assume linear input-output relationship or unimodality of the response function. Regularized regression and random forests, on the other hand, have several properties that may appear important in this context. They are capable, e.g., in handling small number of samples with respect to the number of variables, feature selection, and the visualization of response surfaces in order to present the prediction results in an illustrative way. Results: In this work, the applicability of regularized regression (Lasso) and random forests (RF) in bioprocess data mining was examined, and their performance was benchmarked against multiple linear regression. As an example, we used data from a culture media optimization study for microbial hydrogen production. All the three methods were capable in providing a significant model when the five variables of the culture media optimization were linearly included in modeling. However, multiple linear regression failed when also the multiplications and squares of the variables were included in modeling. In this case, the modeling was still successful with Lasso (correlation between the observed and predicted yield was 0.69) and RF (0.91). Conclusion: We found that both regularized regression and random forests were able to produce feasible models, and the latter was efficient in capturing the non-linearity in the data. In this kind of a data mining task of bioprocess data, both methods outperform multiple linear regression.

Image segmentation is typically at the forefront of such analysis as the performance of the subsequent steps, for example, cell classification, cell tracking etc., often relies on the results of segmentation. Methods: We present a cell cytoplasm segmentation framework which first separates cell cytoplasm from image background using novel approach of image enhancement and coefficient of variation of multi-scale Gaussian scalespace representation. A novel outline-learning based classification method is developed using regularized logistic regression with embedded feature selection which classifies image pixels as outline/non-outline to give cytoplasm outlines. Refinement of the detected outlines to separate cells from each other is performed in a post-processing step where the nuclei segmentation is used as contextual information. Results and conclusions: We evaluate the proposed segmentation methodology using two challenging test cases, presenting images with completely different characteristics, with cells of varying size, shape, texture and degrees of overlap. The feature selection and classification framework for outline detection produces very simple sparse models which use only a small subset of the large, generic feature set, that is, only 7 and 5 features for the two cases. Quantitative comparison of the results for the two test cases against state-of-the-art methods show that our methodology outperforms them with an increase of 4-9% in segmentation accuracy with maximum accuracy of 93%. Finally, the results obtained for diverse datasets demonstrate that our framework not only produces accurate segmentation but also generalizes well to different segmentation tasks.

Study type was retrospective, observational, and clinical cohort. 150 healthy cats were enrolled and 2D echocardiograms analyzed. LA diameter, LV wall thickness, and LV dimension were quantified using three different imaging views. The effect of BW, breed, sex, age, and interaction (BW*sex) on echocardiographic variables was assessed using univariate and multivariate regression and linear mixed model analysis. Standard (using raw data) and allometrically scaled (Y=a × M b) reference intervals and prediction intervals were determined. BW had a significant (P<0.05) independent effect on 2D variables whereas breed, sex, and age did not. There were clinically relevant differences between reference intervals using mean ± 2SD of raw data and mean and 95% prediction interval of allometrically-scaled variables, most prominent in larger (>6 kg) and smaller (<3 kg) cats. A clinically relevant difference between thickness of the interventricular septum (IVS) and dimension of the LV posterior wall (LVPW) was identified. In conclusion, allometric scaling and BW-based 95% prediction intervals should be preferred over conventional 2D echocardiographic reference intervals in cats, in particular in small and large cats. These results are particularly relevant to screening examinations for feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
