An Initial Centroid Selection Method based on Radial and Angular Coordinates for K-means Algorithm

Clustering is a technique for dividing a set of similar objects into same groups and dissimilar o... more Clustering is a technique for dividing a set of similar objects into same groups and dissimilar objects into different groups. Among different clustering algorithms, the K-means algorithm is considered as the most popular due to its simplicity. However, the outcome from the K-means algorithm is highly sensitive to the initial centroid selection. As a consequence, the selection of initial centroids in the K-means algorithm plays a crucial part in accuracy and efficiency. To select the initial centroids more effectively, in this paper, we propose a new method based on radial and angular coordinates. To check the feasibility of the proposed method, we compare our method with the standard K-means algorithm. For the comparison, we use synthetic data sets with different size of instances and number of clusters. The experiment shows that in most of the cases the proposed method clearly dominates over the standard K-means algorithm in terms of execution time and required number of iterations.

Often due to the human perception, deciding whether a bowled delivery is a no-ball or legal ball which causes controversy. As only a single ball can change the fate of the game, so it is obvious to make accurate decision regarding no ball. In this paper, we have divided the bowling crease into two regions and applied image subtraction method on both regions to find the change in pixel values. Later, we have applied our proposed method on real world video frames. Since our proposed method to detect the overstep no ball is grounded on pixel by pixel image subtraction, it eliminates the inadequacy of human perception.

Many industries have already adopted data mining techniques for better productivity by following clear and concise methodologies. But apparel industries are yet waiting to adopt data mining techniques due to the absence of a data mining methodology which meets the particular requirements and business objectives. The objective of this research is to develop such a mining methodology that will be able to fulfill the requirements of apparel industries. This research paper has proposed a methodology for mining industrial engineered manufacturing data of apparel industries. This methodology covers from analysis of apparel industrys manufacturing unit to implement and evaluate mining model. It also includes the analysis of different departments in manufacturing to identify correlation and dependencies among the departments which is absent in the existing methodologies. Furthermore, the proposed methodology provides a clear and unambiguous transitions among different steps to perform data mining.

Issue Starvation in Software Development: A Case Study on the Redmine Issue Tracking System Dataset

This mainly happens due to very simple priority based scheduling algorithms. Issues in software development require resources too and which issue will get the required resources depend on its priority. So the question is: Does starvation occur in Software Development too? The authors tried to answer the question with the help of their prepared dataset named as “Redmine Dataset”. Redmine is one of the popular web-based project management tool as well as an Issue Tracking Systems which also provide role-based access control. Currently, the Redmine ITS has more than 13000 issues and the number of issues is increasing time to time being. The authors have analyzed the Redmine dataset and found that starvation also occurred for issues in Software Development. The authors believe that this finding will steer the Software Engineering community for conducting research on advanced prioritization techniques which will resolve Issue starvation. Furthermore, the authors have provided few future research directions where this dataset can be used.

Software Engineering Practices and Challenges in Bangladesh: A Preliminary Survey

The software development industry of Bangladesh seems to be a promising destination for business ... more The software development industry of Bangladesh seems to be a promising destination for business process outsourcing. But the question is, are the practitioners following proper software engineering techniques, or, what are the challenges they are facing? To answer the question, a survey has been carried out by the authors to understand the software engineering practices and challenges in Bangladesh. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first survey on software engineering practices carried out in Bangladeshi software development sector. A total of 41 organizations based in Dhaka were participated in this survey from 2016 to 2017. The survey was designed based on five objectives namely characterizing the organizations, identifying software development life cycles preferences and challenges, performance measurement, requirement prioritization, and communication. This paper presents the findings of the survey and provides recommendations and future research directions for academia as well as the industry.
