Virtual Worlds (VWs) are a promising educational medium that has the affordances to support constructivist learning and may be used to extend PBL activities in a more experiential way. In this paper we propose a generic framework for designing PBL activities in VWs based on the principles of constructivism, the traditional and technologyenhanced approaches to PBL, and the educational affordances of VWs. The proposed framework has been applied in an HCI Design studio course and the results are presented.

However, less attention has been paid to the understanding of the relationship between these two areas of research, in terms of semantic and structural correlations. Based on an implementation of learning object metadata and learner pro®les in a learning technology system undertaken in the Getting Education Systems Talking Across Leading Edge Technologies (GESTALT) project, this paper argues that the de®nition of a metadata schema and a User Pro®le should be a joint effort due to the complementary nature of these two descriptions in regard to the critical functions of the educational process.

An important reason for web site redesign is to enhance the usability and accessibility for 'non-traditional' user groups like the older population. The paper presents a case study of the redesign of a touristic web portal in order for it to be senior-friendly. The redesign process involved: (a) identification of a set of 7 principles and 45 guidelines (7p/45g) for web design for older adults; (b) heuristic evaluation of the original web site on the basis of the identified 7p/45g set; (c) redesign of the website in an interactive online prototype; (d) comparative summative usability evaluation, which involved 12 older users and posthoc interviews and questionnaires. The results showed that the redesigned web site was significantly more usable and acceptable than the original. This study makes two contributions in the field: first, it outlines a web redesign process for older adults, which is effective in terms of time and cost, making use of various assessments of experts and users; second, it presents the application of this process in a manner that can be adopted and repeated in other redesign cases.

However, being based on a fundamentally different paradigm and lacking any visual tools for inexperienced users, its teaching may lead to confusion and low student motivation. Virtual Worlds (VWs) may help overcome these obstacles, as they have been successfully used in computer programming education. In this paper we present the MeLoISE platform (Meaningful Logical Interpretations of Simulated Environments) for teaching LP in VWs, through which students can experience a collaborative visual interface to the Prolog programming language. We also present an evaluation of MeLoISE, which was conducted during a learning activity that engaged students in collaborative programming for 2 problem scenarios. Students performed very well and were enthusiastic with the new environment.

The term interaction agent is used in order to describe a particular class of interface agents that function as intelligent personal assistants to users of a computerbased system. The interaction agent provides assistance to the user in two contexts. On the user interface level, it assists users to comprehend and manipulate the user interface. On the domain of application level, it provides users with information and advice according to their preferences. This work is being carried out in the context of an ACTS (AC 221) project GAIA (Generic Architecture for Information Availability).

The paper investigates the suitability of VWs as a platform for hosting PBL (Problem-Based Learning) activities and explores their affordances in terms of collaboration support and learning effectiveness. We have designed an educational VW and developed a number of tools that support collaborative learning activities. Using this environment, we have conducted a PBL intervention that required from students to collaboratively design the user interface of a multimedia kiosk. We performed a thorough, formative, multi-method evaluation of the learning activity. The results reveal several encouraging findings about PBL and collaboration mediated by VWs, and lead to a series of recommendations.

The system will gather information from different sources, combining and displaying them in different terminals and user interfaces in the coordination centre at EKAB, the departments of urgent incidents at hospitals and ambulances and on handheld devices. The proposed DSS aims to decrease time of correspondence of ambulances, improve the conditions of work in EKAB, address the pointless use of some official resources, and in general to enhance the quality of service that EKAB offers to all citizens. A first final prototype application has been delivered to the operators of EKAB for trial and has created quite positive responses.
