Dessalegn Masrie
Professionally, I am a seasoned journalist and media expert with a diverse skill set in media content creation and production. I hold a strong academic background, including a BA in Political Science and International Relations as well as an MA in International Relations and Diplomacy and PhD Candidate in Peace and Security Studies at Addis Ababa University. These qualifications have endowed me with a profound understanding of global affairs.
During my tenure as a senior English-language news reporter for Addis Media Network, the largest city-state media outlet in the capital, I spearheaded the production of more than 60 TV programs focused on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and Nile politics. By collaborating with scholars specializing in hydropolitics and Nile matters, I facilitated impactful political analysis.
Beyond political analysis, I served as a key committee member responsible for designing formats for Addis TV, FM 96.3 Radio, and Addis Lisan Newspaper. Together with six other committee members, we successfully crafted approximately 126 media formats, each featuring unique production techniques and presentation styles.
Notably, as the only member representing the English Desk, I exclusively designed 11 program formats, developed news outlines, and assessed production, presentation, and time slots. One of the programs I produced, "The Diplomatic Corner," remains a weekly format today and has even been adopted by other media outlets such as Nahoo TV and Arts TV, illustrating its lasting impact. Through "The Diplomatic Corner," I had the privilege of engaging with more than 47 ambassadors from various countries.
In addition to my extensive TV production experience, I frequently provide analysis on significant national, regional, and international affairs across various private and public media stations in Ethiopia. Some notable platforms where I have presented include ETV, Fana, Walta, ENA, Ahadu TV and Radio, Arts, AfriHealth, Nahoo, Afro FM, DW, Tigray TV, Awash FM, Shega Media, Wazema Radio, Tirta FM, ebs, and more.
Throughout my career, I have showcased my versatility as a journalist by gaining extensive experience in broadcast, print, and digital media outlets. Moreover, I possess expertise in professional graphic design, video editing, camerawork, and content creation. My creativity extends to authorship, with 13 bestselling books, eight of which have been published by Gizuf Digital Service on AfroRead in the United States.
As a co-founder and former managing editor of BTV, a pioneering digital media startup, I played a vital role in offering innovative solutions to businesses and financial institutions. By providing analysis, organizing seminars, and creating unique documentaries, our aim was to support startups, entrepreneurs, and enterprises in their journey toward success.
Recognizing the crucial role of media in business, technology, innovation, and FinTech, I took the initiative to establish and currently serve as the president of the Ethiopian Business and Economy Journalists Association. Through this association, I am dedicated to empowering and enhancing the capabilities of business and economic reporters in both private and public media outlets.
Driven by my keen interest in talent acquisition, innovation, entrepreneurship, and knowledge marketing, I have integrated these areas into my professional pursuits. Since February 2021, I have actively contributed as a trainer, mentor, and coach in entrepreneurial and business education training programs for young innovators and entrepreneurs at STEMpower-VISA. Over the past two and a half years, I have successfully trained approximately 2,000 entrepreneurs, mentored and coached 500 startups, and assisted over 120 entrepreneurs in launching their businesses.
Evidence of my commitment to continuous growth can be seen through my certification as an entrepreneurial skills and financial literacy trainer, mentor, and startup business coach within the STEMpower-VISA network. I am deeply passionate about nurturing emerging talent, fostering innovation, and driving economic development.
In summary, my professional journey encompasses a broad spectrum of expertise, enabling me to make a meaningful impact in journalism, media, entrepreneurship, and education.
