I am the Communications, Education, and Media specialist at the American Association of Geographers. Previously served as a clinical assistant professor of geography at Oklahoma State University. My research focuses on social media, consumption, and virtual geographies. I am particularly interested in georeferrenced media such as Yelp or Foursquare. Other research interests include animal geographies, cyberwar/cyberterrorism, American Sign Language, and the US Deaf community.

Geographers have also long recognized the importance of language in understanding the social and relational nature of space. The study of American Sign Language (ASL) presents a unique opportunity to examine how language use and language creation influence the production of linguistic space. For users of ASL, space is incredibly significant. Because of the visual and spatial nature of ASL, the space surrounding a signer's body is important not only for the signer to communicate, but also for others involved in the conversation to participate. Environments created during conversations in ASL reflect the cultural and linguistic perception of the American Deaf community. By taking a critical perspective on the production of space, it will be shown that those who use ASL, through the medium of bodily performance, create linguistic, and communication spaces that are dynamic and visual. The embodied language of ASL and the Deaf community is a perspective geographers have yet to address.

Twitter has emerged as a global social network of active users who share conversations with one a... more Twitter has emerged as a global social network of active users who share conversations with one another in an online setting. Academics are one community that has increasingly taken to Twitter as a means of connecting with other scholars, sharing research, and obtaining meaningful feedback. Tweeting has become especially popular during academic conferences where conference attendees use Twitter hashtags to filter conference conversations into a separate dialogue. For geographers, the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) represents one such occasion to use Twitter to discuss contemporary developments in geographic research. In this article, we provide an overview of Twitter as well as the ways in which the academic community uses the platform. Following this, we discuss the tweets sent using the hashtag for the 2018 AAG Annual Meeting, #AAG2018. To analyze these tweets, we collected all tweets with this hashtag for a period of four weeks and examined the content using word clouds and sentiment analysis to explore general feelings and trends associated with geography and the AAG Annual Meeting. We conclude with suggestions for future research avenues that could use Twitter data to gauge the pulse of the geographic discipline. Central to this process were several types of information technology, including mobile phones, the internet, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook. Unfortunately this issue is often represented in simplistic, technologically deterministic terms. This essay examines the distribution and growth of several digital information technologies in seven countries rocked by recent protests. Much of the content found online is now user-generated and embedded with geographic coordinate information in what is termed the geoweb. While the geoweb provides extensive databases of digital information, it also represents a pivotal shift in the way that digital space is studied by geographers. Leveraging Social Media to Track Urban Park Quality for Improved Citizen Health

In this chapter, we showcase the use of qualitative data available on two “geobrowsers” (i.e., Go... more In this chapter, we showcase the use of qualitative data available on two “geobrowsers” (i.e., Google Maps and Foursquare) and of a data-mining technique to quantify the sentiment of online reviews about parks. The underlying interest for this study comes from the growing literature suggesting that living near parks or other open spaces contributes to higher levels of physical activity and to lower levels of stress and fewer mental health problems. Mecklenburg County (North Carolina), which encompasses the City of Charlotte, is used as a case study. In a comparison among 97 cities in the USA, The Trust for Public Land ranks Charlotte’s park system at the very bottom and reports their spending per resident on their park system among the lowest 20% of these cities. Considering their lower spending, the city government may be particularly interested to leverage publicly available data from social media to complement the assessments they already perform about their park system, such as satisfaction surveys or quality assessments. Nevertheless, Charlotte’s low ranking – although unfortunate – indicates an opportunity for the city to improve its park system, which in turn could engage residents in more physical activity and, in doing so, create positive community health outcomes.

While some theorists make the claim that “kinetic and traditional military power are losing impor... more While some theorists make the claim that “kinetic and traditional military power are losing importance to symbolic and media power,” in reality the present military situation is complicated by the variety of tactics used by both governments and civilians in multiple and overlapping war zones. The Middle East has recently been the center of enormous military and media attention regarding the use of many forms of “new” media military operations. However, rather than arguing that online warfare has trumped physical encounters, cyber campaigns must be seen as being deployed in conjunction with on-the-ground military maneuvers. The use of online strategies disperses power and allows for an increasing role by non-state actors in both online and offline spaces of conflict. Drawing from the geographic literature on war, especially Derek Gregory's concept of “everywhere war,” examples are offered from Syria, Iran, Gaza, and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
